Ya'll ever watch things that aren't cartoons?

Two weeks ago I decided to take the plunge and get contacts. I went to America's Best to get the eye exam. I didn't know at the time that the eye exam to get contacts is not the same as for glasses (it cost $30 more, for one thing) but whatever I did it. They told me my lenses would arrive within 2 weeks and they'd call me.

I got the call this morning and went at lunch to pick them up. The girl sat me down at a desk and set everything up and showed me how to put them in. I sat there for some ~25 minutes trying to get the right lens into my eye. I could not do it. Every time my finger grazed against an eyelash, my eye reflexively shut. I commented that I'll have to get up an hour earlier from now on just to put in contacts and make it to work on time. On about the 41st attempt, I dropped the lens and it fell onto the (carpeted) floor. After ten minutes of searching, we finally located the lens. It was, of course, torn and now useless. She advised that she would have to order more (since they inexplicably ordered me exactly ONE set of lenses) and it would be another two weeks and I'd have to come back and do this exercise all over again.

I told her thanks, but no thanks. Setting aside the fact that I literally could not get the ****ing thing into my eye, I can drop my glasses from my roof onto the pavement of my driveway and I'm near 100% certain that they wouldn't break, but dropping one of these little rubber-like ****ers onto CARPET destroys them? Nah, I'm good. I asked where the frames were so that I could pick out a new set. She pointed them out and that is when I was informed that I would need yet another eye exam because the one I got two weeks ago was only good for contacts.

I left in disgust. I guess I'd have blown the 80 bones on something equally useless.
After a week or putting in contacts becomes second nature. I remeber having major issues the first time. After like a year I could pretty much toss them in the air and catch them with my eye (not really.) Don't give up--just make sure to get one or two-week disposables. Anything more than two weeks is bad news--they need to be cleaned more and it stings to lose them. Trust me, it gets much easier. You can probably order disposables online if you have a script. I did contacts for about 10 years and am now back to glasses, but I think I'll probably get another contacts prescription as an alternative, as they can be handy (and you can wear sunglasses, etc).

It was my law school, and the bargain is in-state tuition that is now $50k/yr, for a job with a very bi-model compensation picture (i.e., some lawyers make a ton, many don't make over 80k, and 50% of takers fail the CA bar exam). At least it makes me feel less bad for charging what I do.

BTW, for those unawares, Rick and Morty is the new Simpsons.

They said the humour was reliant on cutaways with no bearing on the plot, not that the episodes had no plot. "Plot-driven" stands in contrast to "character-driven", not to not having a plot. One of the examples in the episode:

Quote:
Lois: Peter, you didn't do the laundry today.
Peter: You think that's bad? Remember the time I won a date to Mexico with Gary Coleman?
(cut to Mexico)
Waiter: ¿Qué pasa, señores?
Gary Coleman: Whatchoo talkin' 'bout, Willis?
Winning a date to Mexico with Gary Coleman has no bearing on the plot, ie it could be removed from the episode and nothing would be missing from the plot. A depiction of a nonsensical baseball game with jerky frame-rates and film scratches could also be removed from that episode without (I'm assuming, as I haven't seen the episode) there being anything missing from the plot as a result.

I'm only inclined to dispute it so much, since I'm basing my opinion on watching ~1.5 seasons like 13 years ago. But it certainly was a FG clone then, and based on that clip, if it has evolved, its definitely retained a strong family resemblance, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Early-mid to mid seasons (like 4-11) of Simpsons are literally untouchable. The newer seasons are still surprisingly watchable though - however, TV nowadays is amazingly fickle. I'd argue that, had The Simpsons been put into today's menagerie of shows, it would be completely forgettable.

Family Guy, like American Dad, has had a big shift in focus along the way. FG is more of an avenue to fit the one off jokes in - which is fine - but lacks in character development. That being said, watching good Family Guy episodes for the first time have the highest ceiling of all the shows imo.

American Dad has a huge variance between good and bad episodes. As mentioned already, Roger is quite possibly the most versatile character in TV ever; however, if his character in a particular episode is unlikeable the episode is unwatchable. It's quite impressive how they've been able to take the whole 'nuclear family' dynamic and freshen it up with one alien.

I find that I appreciate Bob's Burgers' humor more than the others, but don't necessarily laugh aloud as much as the others. The main characters are all likeable and relatable, and they tell a story much better than the other shows.

This all being said, when I want to watch old episodes of any of these shows nowadays it's a flip between Family Guy and American Dad - knowing full well that probably the top 5 episodes of any of these shows were The Simpsons.
I'm not in 100% agreement, but this is a very good post.

Nah. Cartman directly talks about how they are having a passionate argument based on previous events and their motivations and actions are central to the overall story of the episode. Which he claims is something that never happens on Family Guy.

Hot take and all, but I think Rick and Morty is terrible. And I've seen 8+ episodes.

Apparently there’s a great episode of Dirty Money about Trump on Netflix.

Cartman: Good, Kyle! That's good anger you're showin' there! See that?! That's emotional character development based on what's happening in the storyline! Not at all like Family Guy.

That's character reflecting plot, not plot itself, it's an entirely valid criticism of Family Guy but it's not what we're talking about. This is:

Cartman: When I make jokes, they are inherent to a story! Deep, situational and emotional jokes based on what is relevant and has a POINT! Not just one interchangeable joke after another!!

Bin Laden: If you look closely at the writing in "Family Guy", you will see that the jokes never derive from the plot, and I think that's totally gay.

I've ranted about it before, but I just don't get its appeal. I don't find it particularly clever, and it seems like every stoner and 10 year old I know likes it and no one else. Admittedly I laughed at I'M PICKLE RICK!!", but 99% of the characters suck and OMG A MILLION DIMENSIONS AND TIME TRAVEL doesn't do it for me.

i don't think they do time travel

Watch S3E7, "The Ricklantis Mixup". There's a twist at the end that may be lost on you, but imo that episode's the acid test; if you don't like it, you genuinely don't like the show.
