No. Historically when you bought artistic material the actual art itself was free. What you paid for was the material it was stored on (canvasses/posters, printed books, vinyl, DVDs etc) ie the tangibles, and a portion of the profit from that went to the artists (and others of course).
This is why people resent paying for downloaded music.
