Because you get the same entertainment from a streamed video as you do from a disc. You get the same stories in a digital book as you do in one on paper. You pay for it so the people who produce the content you like can make more of it. "I don't get anything tangible" is just bull****.

if AT&T and WalMart can profit off prison labor why can't I get a housekeeper out of the deal?

No. Historically when you bought artistic material the actual art itself was free. What you paid for was the material it was stored on (canvasses/posters, printed books, vinyl, DVDs etc) ie the tangibles, and a portion of the profit from that went to the artists (and others of course).

This is why people resent paying for downloaded music.

You can if you're the governor of Arkansas, Louisiana, Georgia et al

wtf should I pay for that?
LOL

All that we see or seem is but a stream of 1s and 0s within a stream of 1s and 0s.

That sounds very profound but doesn't address the conundrum of needing accompanying visual and tangible materials for art that is 100% aural, for instance, to provide a context for what we are experiencing.

CA state senator faces demands to resign after altercation with female lobbyist

Guess the party!

Quote:
The California Nurses Association is calling for a lawmaker to resign from the Senate and withdraw his candidacy for the state Board of Equalization after an altercation with its lobbyist at a Sacramento restaurant.

The California Senate is investigating the incident, which occurred during an evening fundraiser at The Diplomat Steakhouse, a restaurant across the street from the Capitol.

Sen. Joel Anderson, X-XXXXX, was kicked out of restaurant on August 13 after the dispute, which he describes as a misunderstanding.

In a statement provided to The Sacramento Bee, The Diplomat said a “male patron threatened to strike a female patron.”

“This threat was observed by restaurant staff who immediately intervened and escorted the male out without further incident,”
said Patrick Harbison, a spokesman for The Diplomat. He added that the restaurant is willing to participate in the investigation.

The California Nurses Association identified the woman as Stephanie Roberson, its government relations director.

“Specifically, at that event, as witnessed by several people in attendance and restaurant staff, Sen. Anderson engaged in both physical and verbal acts of sexual harassment, that were followed by repeated threats of violence when Ms. Roberson objected to his behavior,” said Bonnie Castillo, executive director of the California Nurses Association, in a statement.

I read Catcher in the Rye not that long ago. I didn't come away thinking, wow great book, but I found myself thinking about it for a long time after. So, great book.

People who resent paying for downloaded music do so because they don’t like paying for stuff in general. Has nothing to do with it being downloadable.

LMAO - Writers haven't made their own books in your lifetime. Directors aren't burning Blu-ray discs. This is the dumbest thing I've heard in a long time.

Probably not, more likely they like free things and the music industry trained them to like the free version of music like on the radio or TV. That or they don't think a 10 year old CD is worth the same price as new release when only 2 songs are any good on either of them, particularly if they already paid for the album and cassette.

You can only enjoy music if you are looking at the CD jewel cover while listening to it?

I don’t know if Catcher is a great book but it’s one of the few reading assignments from high school I kinda remember. Can’t tell you anything about The Scarlet Letter or Tess of the D’villes.

I can highly recommend The Buried Giant by Ishiguro as well.

I grabbed it off my parents' bookshelves when I was about 13 and loved it. Like, This Be The Verse, maaan. Then had to do it in school, which was even worse than doing a book you hadn't read several times before. Must be pushing twenty years since I read it, might revisit sometime. Pretty certain it'll be underwhelming though, so hard to get geared up for.

Umm yes, and what does that have to do with it? I don't think you get the point at all, which to spell it out for you is about how Art is best (and intended to be) experienced within a context, not a vacuum, or it tends towards visual or aural decoration.

Good bit by Conor Friedersdorf:

https://www.theatlantic.com/technolo...-ideas/567550/

Basically argues that media gatekeepers promote the craziest parts of the discourse to maximize engagement, to the great detriment of the marketplace of ideas. Increasingly convinced that this concept is the key to understanding our current political moment. In essence, the media is slinging brain-fentanyl to boost their profits, and it's rapidly destroying the world. CNN's coverage of the Gulf War is when it all started to come undone.

Why Nordic “Socialism” Won’t Work In The U.S.: by Ben Shapiro*

Quote:
But socialism means tyranny and an incompetently-managed centrally planned economy. None of these countries has so much as a single gulag. Nordic countries are not socialism, and anyone who thinks Stalin is good should look elsewhere for their economic model.
Quote:
It’s important to remember that the United States is not a Nordic country. We have more people. We are in a different hemisphere. We do not speak Norwegian. Crime is low there, whereas we put many more people in prison without achieving nearly the same level of safety. The whole comparison is apples and oranges. Saying that free college and single-payer healthcare would work in the United States just because it works in Sweden is like saying that we could watch the Aurora Borealis in Miami if the government said so. Well, we couldn’t. That’s a fact, and facts don’t care about your feelings. You may think you can just wake up and start speaking Swedish. But you can’t. Fact.

I'm probably the one here who was talking about Prague Cemetery. I checked it out from the library.

Perfect!

I liked Catcher in the Rye a lot when I was a teenager. I should probably check it out again to remember why.

One weird Catcher in the Rye anecdote--I had my school assigned copy in my hand in a burrito place in SF and Sean Lennon was sitting at a table eating there. When I realized it, it made me feel very weird.

As I recall I liked catcher in the rye when I read it in school. My daughter loved it. She laughed her ass off reading it and talked about Holden a lot.
08-21-2018 , 04:43 PM
I hated Catcher in the Rye, not just for itself but also for inspiring the entire genre of precocious-prep-school-kid-experiences-defining-life-moment. God how I loathe those stories.
