you need to be shooting Canon not the later generation tech that Nikon bought from Canon. But That lens works on both FX&DX

What's the crop factor going to be like on a DX body?
Multiply a lens' focal length by 1.5 and that will give you your focal length on a DX camera.

How does it perform in the low end of it's range sharpness wise?
you mean edge sharpness, pincushioning etc ? Not as good as a prime lens but totally usable for anything here is a good review.

The bubble front looks kind of unwieldy, can I put filters on that?
No no front filters and no rear slot for filters either.

Since it's going to be a while before I upgrade to full frame would I be better off going with the $700 Tamrom lens for now?
Full frame is more important that anything especially since you are wanting ultra wide angle. Buy a camera first.
Most Tamrons are crap but the high end ones for the last few years have been as good or better than the Nikon lenses. Check Luminous Landscape or
http://www.rickdenney.com/ for lens tests.

Also I'd like to find a $200 or so "driving around" tripod. Weight, balance, ease of setting up are very important to me.
Giottos is your goto brand if you don't allready have money invested in heads. And even if you do really and need the best lowest price set of sticks.

How is Amazon going to help with that?
the reveiws may help but what you need is an expert like myself. I no longer work in camera sales because most shops self destructed by not competing. Most shops that you find will have commissioned salesmen that know less than they should and are steering you towards high markup high commission equipment.
I agree that it is awesome to have a good local provider but those days are gone unless you live in NYC or somewhere similar.

And maybe I need a new camera case. Oh yeah that's fun to buy online.
yeah that blows goats. But Thinktank is all you need to know. they are 100% the best of the best. Slightly more expensive but customer service and product quality far above the competition.
