Thing about the aforementioned late-stage capitalism is that this is what insurance companies do, not because they are directed by a selfish, amoral individual. They are that way as the inevitable consequence of the design of the system regardless of, or in spite of, any decency or humanity of any of the people doing this. We have a system in which most of the power in the world is held by entities (publicly traded corporations bound by fiduciary responsibility) which are absolutely sociopathic.
Yup, agreed.

I'll be calling them tomorrow and raising hell, but I have very little leverage, if any. Ultimately they can tell me to sue them or take it, and at that point I have to take it. My hope is that they always lowball and I can get a few hundred more just by default by calling and complaining.
I do have a photo of the area they claim there was prior damage - it's from last August, but I can also have multiple people attest that there was no prior damage to that part of the car. That may be enough for a couple hundred in and of itself. The rest of it basically comes down to whether different parts of the car were in "good" or "very good" condition...
I've also got a buddy who's father owns a small car insurance company or something, so I'm going to call him for advice.
