We've definitely had this conversation. Wombats are protected, but wombat stew was common among early settlers. They're a fatty animal, so it's a bit like stewing chuck steak. The early settlers en masse switched to rabbit stew after rabbits were introduced, and rabbit meat isn't that great, so I imagine wombat must suck.

You'd need to be able to fold space time or something and that might just not be possible.
I used to think it was probably the distance that explains the paradox. I think Trump pretty much proves "intelligence" beyond a certain point is an evolutionary disaster.

It seems that the British colonists only knew how to make stews. If they had some Italians with them maybe they could have tried wombat lasagna.

Re: April LC Thread: Special "No Collusion" Survivor White House Edition

The Fermi paradox is just mashing a bunch of random numbers together and getting an incredibly random result. If you went to a scientist 100 years ago and said yo, your body is inhabited by a number of bacteria, how many bacteria in total do you think there are in your body, what kind of answers do you think you would get? Because the current best estimate is 39 trillion. We simply have no idea what the correct answers are for a whole bunch of the terms in the equation.

Maybe if herbivores with a strong herding instinct evolve intelligence - instead of omnivores with a fierce territorial/tribal instinct - things turn out different.

That was an interesting aspect of Ringworld by Larry Niven. Also Footfall by Niven and Pournelle.

I would hypothesize that there isn't going to be the same selective pressure in herding herbivores to evolve intelligence as there isn't as much competitive pressure.

Maybe not on earth - but on another planet conditions could be very different in ways we can't imagine.

Elephants are pretty smart and have something like an opposable thumb in their trunks.

Cuttlefish are smart but maybe too competitive to ever evolve primate-level intelligence. Octopuses maybe are too much of loners. Who knows.

I hear the click-clack of your feet on the stairs
I know you're no scared-eyed honey
There'll be a feast if you just come upstairs

But it's no hanging matter
It's no capital crime

I can see that you're fifteen years old
No I don't want your I.D
And I can see that you're so far from home

But it's no hanging matter
It's no capital crime

Oh yeah, you're a strange stray cat
Oh yeah, don't you scratch like that
Oh yeah, you're a strange stray cat
I bet, bet your mama don't know you scream like that
I bet your mother don't know you can spit like that
In some live versions they reduced her age to thirteen.

Among the most celebrated artworks inside are its three stained-glass rose windows, placed high up on the west, north and south faces of the cathedral. Its priceless treasures also include a Catholic relic, the crown of thorns, which is only occasionally displayed, including on Fridays during Lent.
