This community thrived despite the site owners and administrators wanting it to be killed for many years while they supported those in other forums who also wanted it destroyed.
Any benefit this site provided this forum happened almost entirely years and years ago. The impact on the community from the site and support from other forums on the site has been 99.999% negative for a very long time.
The majority of regular posters and lurkers have been on the site for a long time, and that history was the only conytubuting positive. It’s not like there are forums on this site growing and drawing in new traffic, so the benefit from this site to this forum in the last five years is hard to put in any way shape or form positive.
That being said there is a risk of failure. I talk about muscle memory, people get used to doing things regularly and when it changes those habits can stop. It does potentially hurt lurkers/readers from other parts of the site who drop by to get the latest news on occasion.
While I have been bashing ownership and management it is of huge benefit they are allowing the new destination to be publicized and linked. This is so often not the case and in fact any sharing of new destinations are actively scrubbed. So I am much appreciative.
We will see how it goes. If enough of us are able to redirect our habits it has a shot. In terms of any future potential growth? It’s no contest. There is actual potential, perhaps small, for a new site to grow. There hasn’t been any potential for this forum to grow in an extremely long time.
I daily participated in a forum that originally was based on TiVo but it became a very large community and all the other forums become much bigger. Especially as TiVo flailed as a business and moved into being irrelevant. I don’t remember how many years it has been since I posted there and started posting there in 1999 but I regularly posted there for a decade plus. User attribution was ultimately why most people stopped posting there and the name and focus of the site made it impossible for new people to end up there. It is just how this stuff goes.
I was not even a regular politics poster here forever. I really mostly only posted in Obamacare except when I might dip my toe elsewhere and get temp banned. Was the run up to 2016 election that got me into being a daily reader. Will that go on forever, I don’t know, however I don’t watch cable news and I don’t have any publications I read every day/week/month/year. This community has been my go to source for weeding through the information rat nest. I try to share things I come across as well. I feel like this gets me a much more well rounded understanding than if I were to just choose a couple of publications and devour them.
I am hopeful, we will see how it goes.
