They can't replace him on the ballot at this point. A write in candidacy is possible, but for a race where the D was only 6 points behind it's going to be tough to organize.

The most likely scenario, in my opinion, is that Moore still wins and just takes his seat in the Senate.

If the GOP removes him from the ballot, he can't be declared the winner even if he gets the most votes.

What, after everything that has happened in the past 18 months, makes you think that the GOP is going to do anything other than deny these allegations and back the guy up 100%?

We're talking about the GOP.

In Alabama.

I think the only way they withdraw is if they work out that they can still get him to win so that the governor can make the appointment. The GOP will not do anything here that they believe makes a D senate seat a real possibility.

Roy Moore's ghost writer, a self described Christian writer, was accused of molesting a 14 year 9ld girl. Doesn't really matter to Roy himself though.

Susan Collins and Mitch McConnell get to use the "If true" caveat because it simultaneously makes them look tough while giving them an out to still support Moore as they know that the allegations will never be proven true enough for them to outright condemn him.

Exactly. In three days, their quotes will be "it's improper for me to comment on this until the investigation is complete". And then this story, like a million others, will fade into the background.

I'll be the optimist. I think there's a good chance Doug Jones wins.

re: Alabama Special Election (Roy Moore diddles, GOP thumbs up, Mr. Jones goes to Washington)

What's going to make this interesting is that Mitch may very well want Moore to lose for a number of reasons:

1. He'll still have a republican majority;
2. Moore will be a firebrand unreliable vote who will be much more trouble to MM then a dem, because he's really ****ing nuts. Like, makes Ted Cruz look like a democrat nuts.
3. It will validate what he has been stating publicly about the GOP nominating extremist candidates who cannot win in the general election.

This could get really interesting.

Alabamans getting nostalgic over the good old days I guess. Reminds me of this bit by Frankie Boyle. Culturally different but mentally similar.

Mitchell came out with a bland "he needs to resign if allegations are true" statement, giving himself plenty of wiggle room to still support Moore - if Moore doesn't drop out, then obviously the allegations aren't true. EZ Game

Not to turn this story into one about the democrats, but I am slightly concerned that the party will learn the wrong lessons if Jones wins this race. I was optimistic that the party was taking a leftward turn, but I can easily see them glomping onto Jones/Northam and thinking the answer to 2016 is to be MORE moderate.

This Breitbart editor is all over the place. They're all teenagers and all the relationships are problematic. Two might not be illegal, but the fact that he was going that young certainly does give credence to the one underage girl that the abused.

I mean, I don't think it's likely, but Jones was only down by 6 in the polling average before today. It's not exactly a huge leap to think he could close the gap.

PredictIt has Jones at $0.37 now, for what it's worth.
