I kinda hope the margin in Florida stays around 12k after the recount because if it gets down under 10k my lawnmower is going straight for the sun.

The failing New York Times on Abrams: Stacey Abrams Ends Fight for Georgia Governor

Not a word about the lawsuit, not sure if we're missing details or if NYT is dropping the ball. The Boston Globe has this:

Quote:
Democrat Stacey Abrams on Friday said she can’t win the Georgia governor’s race, effectively ending her challenge to Republican Brian Kemp.

She also said she’ll file a federal lawsuit to challenge the “gross mismanagement” of Georgia’s elections.

Her speech Friday effectively puts a stop to the contest. The final result had been in doubt for 10 days after the election.

Like the GOP 2012 autopsy wasn't wrong. They needed to change direction if they were going to be a majority party. Trump came in with his "hold my beer" strategy of maximizing turnout among resentful old white voters, who vote like it's their job but have a short life expectancy. 2016 was the ultimate "one-time" election, with Trump employing a single-game strategy when politics is essentially an infinite game.

The only thing that will keep the GOP from dying as a party is the nature of the Senate and that Mitch played a high-risk game by holding up Garland and creating a backlog of other judicial vacancies. However, even if courts get bad, there's plenty that can be done. The post civil war republicans basically delegitimized and blew the conservative SCt off, and the new deal dems acted similarly, both to great effect.
Yea, like most people here, I hate Trump. But I've been doing a lot of thinking the past few months. As bad as Trump is, and he is bad, in a way, he's done more good for the country than people realize. Prior to 2018, I never really got involved in politics. I voted but that was about it. In 2018, I wrote letters to Congress, recruited about 10 people to vote, protested, and was much more vocal than I used to be. My sister went to law school to be an ACLU lawyer. Look at all the women winning elections. Stuff like this is happening all across the US. This is all good and it's a direct effect of Trump being elected.

All this despite Turtle doing his damn best to rig the courts. Your vote really does count. And we are seeing it now. It's still a dystopian landscape but I have faith.

We haven't even really got into the meat of the Mueller investigation yet. I suspect a lot of people will be under fire and not just Trump. The Trumpkins will never get on board but the rest of the US will see through the BS and act accordingly.

The problem, Matty, is that it's going to end up setting us back decades on so many fronts that all those silver linings are going to be wasted on returning to the 2015 status quo by like 2030 on many issues, at which point you can argue against any benefit because we just spent 15 years taking two steps back and two steps forward instead of one step forward.

That's really looking for a silver lining.
