For example, I know prostitution pays. I'd still feel bad about my daughter being a prostitute. Same with being a stripper. Playing poker or sports betting are on that spectrum somewhere. Yeah, I know by sportsbetting wisely I'm likely making the market a little bit more efficient helping the average guy's entertainment dollar go just a bit further. That's nice. Still doesn't change that I view myself as a degenerate whore. Maybe I never had a choice (the determinist view TomG expressed earlier which reminded me of the one scene in Rounders about the prof choosing law). Regardless, I behave "as if" free will exists. The personal psychology research say that's healthier. I'm a bit skeptical. I sometimes sit up at night thinking about this choice and a few others I've made. doesn't help. I think that helped bring on the cancer. Whatever, I find it a shallow existence, but, then again, what isn't. I wish I would've just moved to outside the ski resorts in Utah and worked at Burger King beginning at 18. Now, have too much responsibility with raising kids to take such a selfish turn for my own happiness. I can only try to impart to them the silly ass choices I made from my late teens to mid twenties and hope they make better ones with the genetic stock I passed on. I would be elated if my children never wager on a sporting event. I want more for them from life.

I have a baby face. I'm pleasant enough in person. I seem kind. I'm quite book smart and quick with a smile. People often forget I'm really an almost intolerable ass. I grew up profoundly unhappy. I spent a large portion of my formative years drinking/drugging with few apologies. I've frequently mentioned Local H "As Good As Dead" as my favorite album; anyone read the lyrics? Just listen to "Fritz's Corner" for the cliffs. "Siamese Dream" and "The Bends" also hit home (2 of 3 of those album creators grew up within miles of me just a few years older -- so I'm not even unique) along with reading Kafka, Twain, and Pynchon.

Regardless, I wish there were adults I respected who would've shook my silly notions when I went off to be an advantage gambler for a career. Sadly, I was familiar enough myself with the psychology lit at the time to know it was a hollow life for someone of my belief structure. By all appearances, it looks like a success as I'm going to put a 6 figure amount on line 38(?) of my 1040 again with a happy marriage and kids I love. It is top 5% of possible outcome space but it doesn't mean I don't wish it was better.

Not becoming a pro gambler at age 21 was probably the best decision I ever made in my life. I don't know if I'd have more or less money - counting was easier back then and the sports and other online opportunities 15 -25 years ago were epic compared to today - but a lifetime of drug/alcohol abuse probably would have gone with it as well.

I personally see absolutely no downside to advantage gambling for a living if you win and have the bankroll such that you don't have to worry about swings knocking you out, other than that 40% of the people in the US along with the US govt think you are some kind of criminal for doing so. While I contribute nothing to society with what I do for money it is easy to take care of that by donating to charity and paying huge taxes (well except that it's the US govt so they'll just use it to arrest/kill non-white people and fill the pockets of medicare scammers but oh well).

You are contributing to society you are taking Money away from degenerative gamblers so they dont gamble anymore.
