Corners throwing in the towel really isn't a thing in the UFC. Seriously, there are hundreds of fights in the UFC every year and how often does a corner throw in the towel? Nick Diaz tried to throw the towel in for Nate back in 2013 but it had no bearing as the ref had already decided to step in to stop the fight. The last time I recall towel throwing being a somewhat common occurrence was in the very first UFCs which had very limited rules.
BTW, speaking of rules, there is no rule stating that corners should throw in the towel when their fighter is in danger. Quite the opposite actually. It is against the rules for a corner to throw in a towel. Breaking this rule leads to the fighter being disqualified. You can't really put the onus of stopping the fight on the corner, when they would have to break the rules in order to do so. They are under no obligation to break the rules. As Anthony Smith stated, if his corner were to throw in the towel in one of his fights he would fire them.
The onus of fighter safety falls on the ref and ringside physician. If the ref thinks the fight should be stopped then he/she has the power to stop it. The corner's job is to give the fighter direction to help him win the fight.
All that being said, obviously there are times (such as in this fight) where it would be in the fighter's long term best interest for the fight to be stopped.
