I'm KrazyKris. 99% of the time you can find me either in SE, or running some sort of game. Or both.
I am nearing post 10K. For this post, I am going to run a thread that I have been thinking about - missed sports betting opportunities. We all have loads of money we've missed out on, so I thought we could post all of our tales of woe.
By my definition, a "missed opportunity" is one of two things;
1) A "sure thing" that you were 100% sure about, but didn't profit off of, or
2) A "longshot" that came through, that maybe you should have placed a wager on
It is not a 12-team parlay where you won the first 11, only to lose the last one in excruciating fashion. Nor is it a result that was changed "after-the-fact", and paid out as such (e.g. the Grand Slam Single, the Fail Mary, or the Chargers-Steelers game where the NFL changed the final score).
If enough people are interested, I would like to make this a draft, to see who can draft the best "team of woe". I would welcome co-owners (if we have enough interest), or we can just share stories. I know I've already got 10 or so off the top of my head.
So if this interests you, please post in this thread, and let me know if you'd be interested in the draft idea. And please post any and all questions, I do have some wiggle room before the milestone post.
It's not the largest numbers or anything as my stake wasn't huge relative to my bets these days but my best story is from 2016 ago I put on a boxed trifecta for the Melbourne Cup (24 runner field, the biggest race in Australia). I never bet on horse racing other than the Melbourne Cup.
Almandin, Heartbreak City and Hartnell went and finished 1st 2nd and 3rd. So my bet came through and was paying out 1541-1. I was very happy.
Turns out i'd misclicked on the online sportsbook I placed the bet with and put on a boxed quinella with my runners instead of trifecta which paid out at 119-1 and because of the additional number of combos for quinellas as opposed to the trifecta I only got a portion of the stake too. Still a nice win for the race, but that one stung a bit.
2009 PGA Championship YE Yang at 250/1. I read a golf blog called leftylinks where he was advised as a value play. He had just finished well at the Bridgestone vs top competition and had already won once that year. I think I passed to bet more on Paul Casey like usual. YE Yang hybrid over a tree vs Tiger ftw. I could have won 100k if I just bet it. Still collected that week thanks to rsigs spotting a pro golfer vs assistant club pro line
