coming up for your viewing pleasure on Sept. 12

Mike Tyson is but a shadow of what he once was
if you can get an inflated price betting against him - I would say that is the way to go
he may be way, way overbet because he is a name - maybe not

from an article 2 days ago about him:

"After getting knocked out at age 35 by Lennox Lewis in a final bid for a title in 2002, Tyson went back into the ring three more times. He beat Clifford Etienne before being knocked out by Danny Williams and 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 in the middle of a fight against Kevin McBride. “If this does not convince the public that Tyson is washed up, perhaps nothing will,” The Times wrote under the headline “Tyson Quits Fight and May Quit Boxing Next.”'

about Roy Jones Jr. as an older fighter:

"On December 30, 2017, Jones announced that he would return to the Bay Center in Pensacola, Florida to headline the Island Fights 46 on February 8, 2018. Jones had previously headlined Island Fights, which is a show that included both boxing and MMA bouts. Speaking of the event, Jones said, "My last day at the Bay. It's my last one for the bayfront ... Civic Center, Pensacola, Bayfront Arena, whatever you want to call it. So if you want to come to see my last day in Pensacola, be there February 8. That's my last one there." He stated it would be his final fight. Jones announced Scott Sigmon (30-11-1, 16 KOs) as his opponent for the 10 round bout.[145] Jones ended his boxing career defeating Sigmon via a one-sided 10 round unanimous decision, also winning the vacant World Boxing Union cruiserweight title in the process. All three judges scored the fight 98-92 in favour of Jones. Jones started off the better boxer landed upper cuts and hooks and remained in control throughout the fight. Jones landed an uppercut in round 5 which knocked Sigmon's mouthpiece out. In round 6, Sigmon began throwing more punches, although they were weak combinations easily blocked by Jones. Jones was also able to counter most of the shots Sigmon threw."'

Didn’t jones jnr fight at like 170? I can remember him getting toyed with by calazaghe for 12 rounds, who is no giant, ofc wildly different styles but still.

Ofc a lot will depend on how seriously each fighter is taking the bout, more so Tyson, but gotta imagine -170 is good value for Tyson?

my OP in this thread is all wrong - sorry about that
at the time I wrote it I did not realize this match was only an exhibition
with all kinds of special rules and objectives

I don't think it's worth betting on unless just for fun

from the linked article:

"Foster also said there will be no judges for this contest, making it a true exhibition with no expected winner. Some gambling sites have offered odds on the match, but it's tough to tell how that will go given it could just end at any moment."

I think everyone is basing this off of Roys post heavyweight chin. We're talking prime for prime here. I don't know that anyone runs through Jones punches that easy and lays him down. Tyson was great but he did struggle with guys in spots and got frustrated easy. I don't know that i see him missing too many punches without it letting mess with him. Not saying Jones wins, but its definitely not the slaughter you guys are envisioning. https://tysonvsjones.wordpress.com/2...les-announced/

One thing I think the market isn't thinking of is Roy Jones Jr Can't Be Touched

To be serious I think a 8 round fight benefits Roy Jones Jr more than Tyson. When the o/u rounds comes out might be good parlaying Roy Jones with the over if you can.

Someone know how books are grading the winner for this? Is it knock out only or can it be won by score?

If it's knockout only that might benefit Tyson, but with Tyson at 54 years old you can't be sure of anything. Otherwise there's enough chance that Tyson isn't really in fighting shape and the name recognition pushing lines way out that the bets against Tyson might be better. Seems like the sort of fight that could be a complete flop either way.

Edit: This seems to be the rule at bovada:
Winner must be announced at venue for action. If no winner is announced for any reason, all wagers will be settled no action regardless of how the fight ended or any judges scores.

Apparently there's no onsite scoring, but there is a "belt" for the potential winner. So not completely sure how this is supposed to work. Will other bookmakers grade the same as bovada?

Possible this weird grading situation may have been a part of the line movements in Tyson's favor.

Disclaimer: I am terrible at sportsbetting

I found these rules for the exhibition match:
https://talksport.com/sport/boxing/7...ges-knockouts/

I imagine that the bookmakers will follow the scoring of the celebrity judges, if it comes to that.

That said, with the combined possibilities that both gentlemen are not making a real match of this and the celebrity judges scoring, I am betting on a draw.

Max allowed bet for me on Pokerstars:
Draw @7.00
1 Bet(s) x 69,88 @ 7.00 returns EUR 489,16

I dunno about the draw. Promoters are worried people are finding out this is a scam to sell tickets and a draw would piss a lot of people off and turn them off for future fights. They put out a press release about how this is a legit fight and it won't end in a draw but who knows. Whole thing seems like a disaster money grab.

Initially I was in on Roy Jones and the over but now with 2 minute rounds and the 12 ounce gloves not gonna bet it or watch. Lost my PPV money.

Yeah draw is interesting, but with so much weird stuff going on I'd be a little scared, also possible that the short rounds and exhibition nature are already somewhat factored in to the offered line. Draw would be massively +EV if they just based it on onsite/no judges, so I guess it's probably fair to assume they're relying on the offsite judges for the pokerstars grading.

Here are the rules I found at pinnacle:

The winner of the Roy Jones Jr. vs Mike Tyson exhibition will be the fighter awarded the Frontline Battle Belt by the WBC. The WBC will have a remote scoring program to aid in the determination of the winner. If the WBC declares both fighters "winners," the fight will be considered a draw for betting purposes and bets refunded.

So if we take the bovada rules I listed above literally (graded based on onsite announcement), it's possible pinnacle and bodog/bovada will grade it differently - bovada based on onsite announcement, pinnacle based on WBC scoring. So if someone wanted Tyson, that might be reason to place your bet there even if the odds are a couple % worse. That's if Bovada follows their stated rule, but there's still a chance the onsite will announce the scoring despite the commissioner saying there wouldn't be any.

Personally though I think I would prefer the odds on Roy Jones considering we don't know what form that Mike Tyson will show up in. $50 ppv is pretty crazy for a match that there's got to be a 50% chance that at least one of the fighters won't be able to put up a performance worthy of being in the ring, but I guess that's half the draw of the event.

Just skip this fight and watch Joe Joyce v. Daniel Dubois. Better entertainment and Joyce at over +300 looks like a great deal of value to me.

Definitely a good chance it turns out terrible, I'm waiting for it to go up on youtube or something to actually watch what happens so I can just skip through most of it.

I think it really comes down to what Tyson looks like. From Roy Jones training videos his punches looks a little stiff. Not terrible but not exactly strong pro boxing material (which is understandable). Pretty good footwork. Tyson training clips on the other hand he looks amazing... but they're like 3 seconds long, so it's tough to say what his real condition is. He could walk out and destroy Roy Jones or just fall apart.

I put a small amount on Jones at +173 but not completely confident in it, probably would have bet 3x as much if I could have got +195 or so.
