Hi,

I just started getting into sports betting (via my pokerstars acct) and was wondering what is the difference between a match play bet and 3way money line bet. To me it sounds the same, however for hockey games pokerstars has match play bets while for basketball they have 3way money line bets. Do they just call it different things for different sports?

A 3 way line includes draw, so if you bet the draw and the game goes to OT you win (or if its a draw in soccer or whatever)

If you bet on say the Golden Knights and it's 2-2 after regulation and 3-2 Golden Knights after OT, a 3 way bet on them would lose as they were not winning at the end of regulation but a 2 way bet on them would win

I mean that's what I'd have thought, but that the OP says it's there for basketball where it should be irrelevant, but not there for ice hockey where it should be is a bit odd. I've never tried Stars sports betting product so I don't know if it's just the OP making a typo or something else

Thank you for the responses.

No, it wasn't a typo. With the 3way basketball, the results seem to depend on the score at the end of regulation time (not inc. OT). With the match play on hockey the results also depend on the score at the end of regulation time, opposed to money line bets that depend on the score after the game is over which may include OT.

I know you two know this, but it was more to state my understanding and to any other newbies that come across this post. However, both of you did confirm to what I had thought, so I believe it seems to be just terminology related to each sport. Kind of like how we'd call someone a referee in one sport and an umpire in another.

Some Stars betting options seem to be a bit strange. Recently they had a hockey bet "Will the match end in Regular time?" paying 1.18 for yes, and another "Will there be OT?" paying 1.25 for no. It's the same bet but pays out differently. I placed a small equal bet on both, won, and the payout was as expected.
