How should an American go about cashing out from a Sportsbook?

Sorry for the noob question, I'm asking for a friend of my Dad's. Apparently he's an American who made some money on an online sportsbook (don't know which one) and is having a difficult time cashing out due to the legal status of online gambling sites down in the states. I'm just wondering how the majority of American sports bettors here go about cashing out?
Sorry for the lack of specifics, this guy just wrote my Dad an email and my Dad asked me because of my poker experience. All my experience is cashing out from poker sites to Canadian accounts though so I wasn't really able to answer this.
