From WNYC

Like Sandy Frucher, the man chosen last year to resuscitate New York City OTB as its new chairman.

"People have described it to me as a gathering of, sort of, people who are down on their luck or losers or whatever," Frucher says.

We're sitting in his home -- a five-story townhouse decorated with antique Chinese vases and tapestries. Frucher says he doesn't like gambling much. He saves his betting for the stock market. But he says he still knows exactly what OTB's problem is. It needs an image makeover.

"In England, horse racing is the sport of kings," Frucher says. "In the United States, it used to be 'National Velvet.' Now, the picture is some poor folks who've had some bad luck, standing in front of a deteriorating, ugly, rotten OTB parlor."

So Frucher has a plan: Change the demographic of OTB customers. He says the current customer base is dying out: 92 percent male, average age of 55. The demographic of OTB's future will look a lot different when he's done with it, he says: younger, hipper, richer. And, a lot more female.

This is Sandy Frucher's vision: twenty-something-year-old girls dancing under chandeliers in trendy bars -- betting on horses in between cocktail sips. In six months, Frucher hopes to install self-service Internet betting terminals at bars like the Village Lantern at Bleecker and Sullivan to replace the OTB parlors he'll shut down.

The Village Lantern is only a 10-minute walk from the Varick Street parlor, which is likely to close since it's one of the less profitable branches in the city. Tonight, one of the Lantern's customers, Shannon Phelan, says she'd gamble if there were OTB terminals in here. She says it sounds like a great excuse to get drunk and yell. "Because that would be hysterical!" Phelan says. "Are you kidding? You are drunk, you whip your money down, you cheer on a horse -- that would be great."

LOL,pretty funny read there Kev. I use the pdf basics for my capping at DRF,old school i guess,i noticed the last few PP's also had the ML on them, and that really ticks me off. I could care less what John White thinks,or any ML maker to an extent,i just hate seeing them when im doing my capping.

I cap with very ocd behavior,i like doing things MY way,and a certain way. I have some markings on my PP's that look like hyroglifics, but i know what they mean.

As for your story,im all for girls,i know Kev and i have the same taste in women,i have big hands and not afraid to fill them up,but i never ever look at horseracing as gambling, but as a job,and a passion. My best friend growing up my great grandmother, was from Saskatchewan, and she would always tell me she hoped i could find a job that i liked,so work never felt like work. We would usually have these talks while the 2nd period ended from the CBC broadcast, and i could see "Peter the Puck",as a kid i thought that was the coolest. She made it till her late 90's,and at 92 i would stop in once a week to see her,and i would have to stop her from going on her hands and knees backwards down the stairs, to the basement to get me a coke....This is where i get my loyalty,so chances i do anything different with PP's is remote, lol.

Just felt like sharing that, sounds like Kev you felt the same for your grandfather. As for gambling, if i want to do that,i will eat my wifes cooking

OMG, I'm the same way in regards to ML.

I look at it after my handicapping is done, to get an idea of where my value might be at. But, I do NOT want to see it while i'm handicapping and have it influence my decision making process. Del Mar's website had a great tool. It was a handy little program where you would punch in the % chance you feel each horse has of winning and it would give you the proper odds the horse should be. Measure that to the tote (or ML) to gauge value. I had it downloaded into an old computer, it might still be on the site.

Preakness Draw & Morning Line Odds... While most are likely to claim they are "savers," the haters will claim they'd rather be "lucky" then good. And since neither of the Irish eyes are smiling, personally I'd rather bend and twist.

1. Aikenite - Javier Castellano - Todd Pletcher
20-to-1

2. Schoolyard Dreams - Eibar Coa - Derek Ryan
15-to-1

3. Pleasant Prince - Julien Leparoux - Wesley Ward
20-to-1

4. Northern Giant - Terry Thompson - D. Wayne Lukas
30-to-1

5. Yawanna Twist - Edgar Prado - Rick Dutrow Jr.
30-to-1

6. Jackson Bend - Mike Smith - Nick Zito
12-to-1

7. Lookin At Lucky - Martin Garcia - Bob Baffert
3-to-1

8. Super Saver - Calvin Borel - Todd Pletcher
5-to-2

9. Caracortado - Paul Atkinson - Mike Machowsky
10-to-1

10. Paddy O’Prado - Kent Desormeaux - Dale Romans
9-to-2

11. First Dude - Ramon Dominguez - Dale Romans
20-to-1

12. Dublin - Garrett Gomez - D. Wayne Lukas
10-to-1

Do I get to cash my Caracortado or Aikenite Derby Futures tickets if they win the Preakness???

Needless to say I like both of those horses and of course Looking at Lucky. And I guess Super Saver...

Thinking of betting this kind of chalky tri:

7,8
1,7,8,10,12
1,5,7,8,10,12

Thoughts? I don't like Caracortado or Jackson Bend, and I think that fading them on the bottom is where most of my tri value will come. I think that Caracortado is just weak in general, and hasn't run well since February really, and he hasn't run on real dirt his whole career. Jackson Bend, while a Zito horse that has some upside, I don't know if he has the stamina to run 1 and 3/16 after seeing him die off in the Derby, and he hasn't run a good figure since Zito took him under his wing.

I'm also considering playing some Exactas fading Lookin at Lucky and Super Saver, as I figure they'll be taking up all the bets in the exacta pool and that with a bad trip for one or both, an outcome featuring some mix of Dublin, Paddy, and Aikenite on top isn't all that unlikely.

Then obv place a big saver bet on Super Saver to win.

I disagree on Caracortado. Watch some of his race replays. Got some serious bad trips. Valiant run in the Santa Anita Derby. I'm high on Caracortado and Aikenite (don't necessarily like the 1 post, but meh...)

anyway, to each is own. There's a 90% chance I'm wrong.

Agreed.

I like the fresh ponies, probably using Cara and Schoolyard dreams. I love the way schoolyard corners.

Don't like any of the new shooters in The Preakness and of the returnees from the Derby the only one you can bet is Lookin at Lucky. I think he might even go off the favorite if not for the casual fans just betting the Derby winner. Lookin at Lucky with even a decent trip wins this race, imo. Best of Luck , Men.

i have to agree...went over this race last night and again today, and i don't really find alot to get excited about. used lal and ss on top of exactas, tris, and supers. didn't spend much.

same goes for the black eyed susan today...fav on top of some other stuff. boring imo.

just got an email from my partner who is at pimlico for the weekend races and the 2yo in training sale monday. (sorry no hot tips...he was asking me for some) lol. we have put together a short list of ponies to get vetted for possible purchase. tried to find one last month at the obs sale, but our top picks all had issues. staying hopeful for this sale. tough tricky business, a real eye-opener.

Random one off question

If I want to attempt to compare finish times, is there some type of standard people use to +/- times for the track variant?

I think the Beyer speed figures are your best bet.

LOL,you da man Kev,you da man!....You said a couple weeks back you needed parentel locks so you wouldnt watch those channels so i just assumed.....I watch calracing, never TVG...

I am going $200 on LAL for tomorrow, has a better post and different karma i hope with Garcia on board....I also would not be suprised to see Caracortado win it to be honest,i think the track plays to this horses favor.

I am already going with Ice Box for the Belmont,i think 1 1/2 is perfect for him.

8th race tonight at Hollywood Kev,Bad Bad Gaby, sure thats never the case, but name play all the same.

I had some interest in this horse as well. He'll be very close to the lead if not on the lead early on, but I'm not quite sure he can go 1 3/16 miles.

lal obv seems poised to win but he will probably be the post time fav.

I'm not sure how you can bet SS at the price we will be getting. + He had the perfect trip in Kentucky and will not get that same trip again. There were a few horses that were better than SS that ran into bad trips in the derby....like PoP. due to his trip, he was stuck 12 back in the derby. Today he won't be that far back..PoP might be your best value with the best chance to win.(if we get 9/2 or better)

thoughts?.......

Also, let's hear what everyone thinks about the early and the late pick 4's. Would be appreciated.
