Easier to regulate. Due to the issues with problem gambling governments typically dont want
bookmakers competing for customers........ online hampers that, but the way online bookies advertise in australia is highly regulated.

In Australia and NZ the governments (state governments in australia) used to own the TAB system. Big tote horse racing organisations; they were all privatised. I believe the WA government still holds a minority stake in TABTOUCH.

But now each state in Australia only grants one license for betting in a shop (unlimited online licenses). i.e. there is only one brand shop where we can place bets in Australia.

Can you think of any other countries where the government runs sports gambling themselves and doesn't allow/license anyone else to take bets legally? I know Israel and Turkey do this.
