The reason normal people consider gamblers scumbags is because most of you actually are scumbags.
You called that an errand? I would ask for way more time consuming errands from the few i called friends and not even think about it for an second. One of my close friends had hit an bad financial spot couple of years back, lost his car, and i drove him to and from work for almost half an year. It adds an extra 30 minute each way to my own job and its 5 days an week. So roughly, i probably had spent about an 100 hours on that (errand). Look, i understand everyone look at things differently, hence my original post. But I myself do not consider asking him to walk over to the sportsbook to make an bet an errand. And if his the type that would have consider that as being too much of an hassle, we would never have been friends to begin with.
I am not definitely not the type to ask my friends to go break the law. I did not even know this is breaking the law,etc Most non
serious players, bettors would not know this or even care. He goes to vegas an few times an year, and he knows i like to bet nfl to
sweat the games. Although he did not ask on this trip, on previous trip he ask ask me first if i would like to make an nfl bet since his in vegas.

And he kept the betting slip on the table with his poker chips. And left it unattended to go to bathroom. And someone at the table grabbed an in-progress bet with cameras. And girlfriend didn’t see it. And a person cashed a stolen slip knowing it is on camera and a jailable offense. With evidence also he grabbed at the poker game.

And it is cashed 3 minutes after the last game. And he leaves town.

Yep.

Dude played you like a fiddle. He was hoping you would say less than $300 though, cuts into his profit margin.

The whole story is nonsense, the 3min after game ended lie is the topping on the nonsense cake!!

The balls on his buddy though, not only does he steal from his friends, he rebates half the theft to seem like the good guy and sets up the bigger long con.

That is one out of 20 things.

Like a sports bettor would leave an active ticket on top of their poker chips while going to the bathroom. And a player would just take it with the girlfriend right there, cameras and other players.

The parlay for just that sequence alone would be 1,000 to 1.

It was at blackjack.....players are always in and out. Like I stated before, $600 is not alot of money to him

Even more cameras watching BJ. Nobody puts a live betting slip on top of their chips and no player grabs someone else’s slip like that. That also magically hit and was cashed 3 minutes after.

His girlfriend probably took it...

A little late (actually not) but your friend could easily file a police report. Police could subpoena tape of cash-out at sports book. They have the exact time stamped.

I am not sure how long they hold on to tapes, but they aren’t erased immediately. They keep them for a bit in case a customers accuses casino of cheating (happens.)

Now the point isn’t to file a police report, but to see how your friend reacts. In Nevada, I believe you have up to a year to file a police report for theft.

They also have cameras at BJ but it sounds more nebulous when the ticket was taken. They aren’t going to spend resources unless they believe this was a pattern.

The outside the box plan to ensure maximum police involvement? Say you believe this is tied into the recent armed casino robberies. Guaranteed to get a response.

His intentions were probably good, he's just a degen. Since the ticket was cashed 3 min after game, he probably got really excited because he had a chance to freeroll your money in the pit. Probably lost it all and freaked out.

Definitely a possibility. Which would have been a better story to tell. We can all understand that.

I was amazed when I called from out of state that they obliged my request to look up a ticket. I told them the approximate time and the bet. Loser!

Hey, great job picking a 3-teamer! Ain’t easy.

why couldn't you just make this bet online...?

I didnt know the camera was an option for that amount of money, plus i was thinking the chances of recouping the money is extremely low.
Like some have suggested, i could have bet online . The options and juice are also better online, but i am an recreational bettor and only like to bet now and then. With an live
book , i can win my one bet or parlay and get the cash. I think online books required you bet roll the money an few times and rightly so. Since it costs them money to take your deposit and to cash you back out.

I think they keep security tapes for something like 3 months. Probably regulated.

They do this for a host of reasons, mostly in the self-interest. They review suspicious play and unexpected wins. And to examine employees where players are winning a greater than expected amount. They want to go back and see if there is a pattern.

Also to protect them against accusations of them cheating players.

Now, I don’t think they would let you see the tapes over such a trivial amount. You weren’t even the real victim. Your friend was since he purchased the ticket.

No online book I know of makes you roll over your deposit, nearly all books will give you a welcome offer ( free bet) if take casino bonus you have to roll it over.

Online books make money on juice like a shop book , they want your bets so give sports betters good offers which you should always take, casino no good if red as have roll it over at least x30..

Odds are you were taken for a mug, I would say 90% he cash ticket 10% honest mistake.

Learn from it and never ask any one place bet for you again...

I don't know but if it was me who lost a friend's ticket and I could afford the $600 I'd pay him the full amount without having to think too much about it. (It'd suck bad to be out $600 but that would be the honorable, stand-up thing to do.) The very first thing I would've did actually is explain what happened and then immediately offer to pay the full amount...

This happened to a guy in my arbitrage group. He got the money back eventually but it took ages as the bookie had to go through the CCTV to verify that he had made the bet and that someone else had cashed it. This was in the UK so God only knows how it would be handled in Vegas.

Why would the casino be in anyway liable to pay twice? That would open themselves up to scams as people accidentally got their tickets “stolen”.

It isn’t their responsibility (afaik) to ensure the proper person cashes out. How would they even know who made the original bet?

Perhaps in the UK there is an ID system for making and collecting bets and the casino failed to do it.

If I agreed to make this bet for you, we are obviously very good friends because otherwise I'd never do it.

Knowing that, I think it is 100% on your friend. He knew the risks of doing this, and they didn't work out. I would pay you $600 if it were me to not damage the friendship. There's just know way you are going to feel the same about him with that doubt (however small) in the back of your head. He knows this and if he doesn't want to make it right (at least in some way) I seriously question the story because he knows what's at risk.

Probably unpopular opinion but a different perspective.
