Been thinking a bit about the NHL playoffs, it's normally very heavy in variance and I don't expect this to be any different

with some initial looks it seems there could be some value in a few of the teams

1. The bye is nice, but it's still winning 3 vs 4 matchups for conference (or 4/5 for cup) and yet the odds are significantly higher

2. the gap between some of the teams isn't really that big - after BOS/TB there's a big cluster of teams more or less equally talented

3. the bye teams will play a round robin for their own seed which they likely won't really go all out for just trying to stay healthy + random 1 off after long break variance

so my plan is to target team on the western conference that don't get the bye

I particularly like WPG, they are basically a pickem in their own matchup vs Calgary and yet have some of the worst odds to win conference or cup. Furthermore, they have a boat load of talent on that roster and severely underperformed this season.

Going to spend some more time looking into this over next few days

I ended up putting very small amounts on
WPG/CLB/CHI/VAN/NYR/EDM/TOR

team - payout for conference winner/payout for cup winner

WPG 25/50 - incredibly talented underperforming team that are some of the biggest dogs, genuinely considering putting down more on them

CLB 30/50 - going to be fully healthy and like WPG are far better than their record suggests

VAN 16.3/35 - Homer pick, I love watching them play, but they also face MIN, a team that wasn't expecting to get a COVID playoff spot and did a firesale mid season and will genuinely prefer to lose the opening round

NYR 26/38 - team has a scary offense that could make waves against some rusty defenses/goalies

CHI 31/70 - like NYR but better odds and easier path to the cup

EDM 11/24 - only bet on rumors Edmonton could be a hub city which would net a massive advantage - also works as a hedge since they face CHI in first round but somewhat decent as is given that in the playoffs they can afford to just put Draisatl and McDavid on the ice at the same time for 25 minutes like they did in the early season

TOR 12/22 - only bet on rumors Toronto could be the other hub city, tons of talent here as well, much higher upside than a lot of teams with much worse odds

these are just for like a buck or two, will make larger bets later on once i have more time to look into things

really hoping they just say f it and make Winnipeg the site of the playofffs

also got western conference wins cup at +120, that's the one line I'm confident in is good as it basically assumes BOS/TB makes it there
