Idk he's far more likeable than the typical degens I encounter. The ones I rub shoulders with tend to be insufferable POS that I find myself rooting to see lose. They sit at the poker table to take a breather from the beating they took in another game. While gracing the poker table, they whine about how they have the worst luck of anyone in the world, they get angry at the dealers over the cards that come out, and they berate other players for not playing a hand as stupidly as they would have. I feel like I can spot a degen the moment they sit down just from the personality that they all seem to share.
Now it occurs to me that maybe there are two types of degens and maybe that's the answer to the question of whether gambling addiction is a real disease. That is, maybe the fat guy in the documentary is the kind of degen for whom the addiction is a disease, while perhaps the degens I described are just deadbeats being deadbeats. (How convenient of me to hypothesize a separate category for the people I dislike, that's some good science right there
)
