Great Post. I have a question.

Is this assuming everyone had folded up to you at this point on the button/co/BB? Or it this attempted with a limper (or two) in the pot?
It's presuming that every1 has folded to you.

This thread deals with when there are limpers

Pokey, thanks for this post. It has been a big help so far in improving my game.

Just to let you know, the link in the master sticky thread for this thread isn't working

However, I don’t recommend stealing “only” 20% of the time. I recommend stealing much more often than that. As an example, my steal rate of 38.3% corresponds roughly to stealing with “any pair, any ace, any king, any two broadway cards, and any suited connector down to 87s.”
WTF kind of range is this?! We are playing NO-LIMIT Pokey! Why do you prefer hands like K5o or A3o vs 76s or T7s, T9o?
First of all I would like to say thanks for the good post, pokey. Secondly, why aren't these questions discussed?

Being a limit player, your range sounds like something I would steal with. However, as far as I know different hands are valueable in NL, and Isuras reaction seems to imply the same.

Would anyone care to elaborate? What kind of hands would you steal with?

Something like T7s or T9o has more "Big hand" potential than K5o or Q4o. Big hands are 2pr+ IMO. K5 or Q4 makes a strong TP (ks or Qs) a lot, but thats not enough for a big NL pot. Its good for a decent pot in limit though.

But if you make a straight or flush with the T7s, you have enough hand strength to win a big pot. There is a section in NLTAP about this- AI preflop equity doesnt necessarily make a strong Nl starting hand. Hence T7s > K5o.

I get the picture. It's not like you win with khi at showdown in NL. Could anyone give me a suggested range for a button steal vs tight blinds?

Just trying to figure out a profitable solution to blind stealing:

Pokey is trying to steal the blinds 38.31% of the time.
He is risking 4BB to win 1.5BB.
Suppose Pokery is in CO and i'm the big blind and I know he is attacking the blinds 38.31% of the time(e.g from PT).
He has just raised 4BB from CO and the small blind folds.
I'm going to re-raise him 12.5BB with a range of hands so I'm going to risk 12.5BB to win 5.5BB (4 BB from Pokey and 1.5BB from the blinds).

In order to be profitable he must fold to my re-raise X% of the time:
5.5x>(1-x)12.5 =>
x>0.69

This means I can re-raise him with top 31% (100-69) of his blind stealing range (38.31%).
31% of 38.31% means 11.78%

I believe that being OOP is an advantage here because if he corectly calls me with my re-raising range I'm going to c-bet him. Most of the time after the flop he will be there with an unimproved hand or third(second) pair and he is likely to fold.

The fact that I'm going to c-bet him if he calls me means I should re-raise him with more than 11.78% top hands....maybe even 15% here.

solid article . . . blind-stealing is key.

anybody who thinks it's not worth it better think again.

the degree should fit your comfort level and and be tailored to your opponents but you are missing out on a goldmine if you don't do this at least some

If your blind steals are a standard 4xBB, then you will wager 4xBB to win 1.5xBB, so if you immediately win 3 times out of 11 you will show an immediate preflop profit, even if you never win a hand when you don’t win preflop.

He meant 8 times out of 11 to show an immediate profit.

very nice, im definitly going to start stealing more, though ium not sure how this will work out on micro stakes

Pokey is my all-time 2p2 hero and dammit I miss him why hasn't he been posting lately?

What a fantastic article - that has given me some insight to stealing blinds for when I have a sufficient bankroll to hit the small stake games.

Cheers.

I'm pretty sure he just meant that 38.3% includes that same amount of hands, not necessarilly those exact ones. Poker obv realizes that K2o is trash and 76s is the nuts.

very nice
i raise to 3bb + 1bb per limper on the button with ATSB% of 37

lol wtf happened to poker these last few years?

it's so weird that "open a lot of buttons" was like, groundbreaking advice at the time

Bump. This thread was more eye opening and had a bigger impact on my success and ability to become a winning player than any other. Thanks Pokey, wherever you are.

I thought Pokey was back. :-(
