$20k per year? That is below minimum wage.
07-05-2012 , 06:15 PM
Think the minimum wage in US is around 7.5 dollar a hour. Say we work 40h weeks and we work EVERY f week. that's 15k dollar.
07-05-2012 , 08:51 PM
Very few min wage in the us, describing most in America as making 20k is just wrong.
07-05-2012 , 08:54 PM
It's a lot bigger percentage than you probably think...median HOUSEHOLD income is ~50k. Have to remember many people work part-time, **** jobs. There are a ton of lower class ppl in America (rightfully so, work until you've earned just below the poverty line >>>> trying to find a slightly better job). For your personal sample size of Caucasian friend with a job/career, they make way more on average. I always am baffled by these wage stats and then I remember the world I/we live in is not the norm. There are infinite uneducated, welfare, etc.

Average gross salary in the US is $47k. That's per person. Not sure what the median salary is though, I'd expect it to be a bit less.

I heard the other day that median gross salary in London FOR PEOPLE WITH JOBS is £27k - that's a lot higher than I was expecting.

Couldn't really find a link with an average income of the single individual in the USA. Here's one showing that 1.7mm individual's primary job pays minimum wage, meaning they could work more than 1 job and effectively be making more than the $15k/year that $7.25/hr gets you. It also states that 2.2mm are working below minimum wage, but the data doesn't include "overtime pay, commissions, or tips received".

http://www.bls.gov/cps/minwage2011.htm

I think ~$20k/year sounds about right for the average pay of eligible to work Americans. Could be higher though easily as well.
