Yea, I'm definitely taking new job as well.

Is it bad form to counter their offer for 10% more btw?

There have been tons of layoffs lately (like 60 yesterday alone).

This new position is for less money (7% less annually), but is a salary position, and is a WAY shorter commute -- 20 minutes vs 1h20m AND I get to work with 3 friends I've had for 10+ years.

No brainer take the job with the shorter commute?

My current boss is a really cool guy, but the amount of control he has is minimal -- everything is pretty much controlled by the director of IT who doesn't work on site. Don't know him too well. Pretty standard business casual office environment.

The new boss seems really down to earth too, and the IT dept seems to have a lot of fun; they asked me if I thought it would be appropriate to ride a scooter around in the office. I said no, no it wouldn't, and they had me turn around, and there were two razor scooters sitting there. The other IT guy was playing an electric guitar when I got in.
No-brainer for many reasons, not the least of which is your career. Working as an SDE at a large firm establishes that you ARE an SDE on your resume. Working in IT for some hospital means a lot less. When I see resumes from guys who claim to be SDEs and they were like the only IT guy at a non-IT firm (or something like that), I'm usually thinking O RLY.

this is wrong.

you don't even have to frame it in a negative way. here's the play:

talk about how interested you are. then, you can even be completely honest and say like look. my current job is paying me 7% more and my significant other isn't happy with me taking a pay cut. is there anyway you could bump to 10%?

i would be shocked if you don't get at least 5

Because there is a lot of people that would take the job for the same amount of money, or some other reason? I don't know much about the IT field but it seems reasonable to me that if they wanted to hire you at 50k they'd be willing to hire you at 55k, or maybe they say 52.5k. I mean, if countering puts you at a chance to lose the original offer I'd think about it, but I was figuring they'd just say no, 50k is the top salary we can pay you. In which case you accept then?

take that job chaos.

No brainer. The 1+hr commute will crush your soul sooner than you think. Plus what Bilbo said. Plus what everyone else said.

Trust me, the commute is already trying to crush my soul into a diamond.

It's the main reason I want this new job

My work just filtered web content for like an hour, and now it's back.

Another great reason to get the hell out of here....

IT people shouldn't be filtered. Cruel and unusual!

If you play it right, the worst they can do is say no.

Examples of playing it right vs. wrong are needed!

Posting from my new house, finally. After the furniture went in, I realized how ****ing huge my house is (brag!). I have to buy a ton of plants and stuff, as I have a ton of echo even with the curtains hanging. Even my keyboard sound has echo.

Anyone has any tips on decorative pieces for walls/corners? I think keyser had some great paintings custom made, but I suppose that that would be very expensive? I don't have much money left since I bought a 12k couch (not really but better to feed you trolls a bit).

none of your friends are artists? sometimes you can get some decent paintings from friends who paint.

Grad school students:

What do you budget a month for living expenses? I'm going to be starting law school in the fall and have about 24k for living expenses plus some savings. I live in NYC so that's like 15k most places I'd guess. Just trying to figure out if I can get away with spending like 60% of my money on rent/utilities. I don't really think there is much else I have to spend money on except like $80 for phone, $100 for subway, and whatever is left for food.
04-21-2012 , 07:25 PM
Tbh I have the luxury to not care about my expenses and just pay everything, but as for budgetting goes.

Definately try to cut on restaurants I guess and just cook yourself pasta and don't turn the heat on that much. Rather take an extra blanket I guess
