I think the chances of an electric car future are super overrated, baring some sort of massive leap forward in battery technology it's just not feasible economically or practically.

Hydrogen has a better chance of the new normal. Natural gas is ahead of electric too.

Hell, once you account for you electricity coming from a coal fired plant and the massive environmental costs of those batteries, a TDI is just as good environmentally and much more practical.

Those look great but they are awful cars. I have seen about 10 all broken in the street of my company. I can't imagine that there are many of those in holland so they must break often.

Also, they are a lot more expensive. I really don't give a **** about pollution but the government does and gives me insane reduction on the EV.

I agree on Hydrogen in 20 years but the problem is we have 20 years inbetween.

I don't much like the electricity coming from coal argument because electric cars aren't meant to solve all of our problems by themselves. Other problems have to be fixed too.

I do think that electric vehicles are very interesting for the near future because it has so much potential. They are just one major improvement away from having 800 km ranges or charging near instantly. Apparently these cars can easily be built very fast as well, I saw a video of a model S out-accelerating a BMW M5, which astounded me.

Currently the trucks that drive on gas instead of fuel are terrible; I believe they cost more in maintenance+gas than a normal truck on diesel, on top of the ******ed look, small cabin and the insane purchase price.

Speaking of more effective transport; I saw some short video some time ago on some kind of tube pipeline that worked with a vacuum allowing travel to about 6000 km/h. Why is this not being built between paris and new york or LA? I must miss something but it would be awesome to go to the US or asia in 2-3 hours.

A couple thousand mile long vacuum? lolololol
05-13-2013 , 04:23 PM
Yeh, it's year 3000 stuff.

But you probably CAN make air filled tunnels and fly planes with very short/stubby wings, computer controlled obviously. You can probably get much higher capacity than you can with real planes, and probably better fuel efficiency. Trip times are also lower as there's no take off/landing and you're flying a more direct route. Hard to imagine situations where it'd be economical though.

It'd be easier to launch something into orbit and back than to maintain a 3000 mile vacuum.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbojet_train is quite fun
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground_effect_vehicle also

With the latter you run it more like a train with a tunnel (or just a valley) and you can pack loads in next to each other (or in a literal train). Along with the advantages I already listed above, I guess the failure mode is a lot better than in a real plane - you build it so that you just skid along rather than drop out of the sky.

Any recommendations for a nice looking laptop bag? It doesn't need to cary a huge laptop, but I often have lots of books/papers.

I usually read a few of these when I'm making purchases these days, not sure if it was really what you were looking for or not though.

Hi everybody.

I just bought a Chrome lappy bag. Probably overpriced, but pretty nice and I got 55% off through my work.

Does Kil still post? If so - do you know of Alex Wolfe? 2006 SSF2T US champ and UI designer at my work. I've never seen anyone that good at Street Fighter in my life. Un****ingreal.

tbh it's a dissapointment (imo). Way overhyped and only "Get lucky" which has been overplayed already was a good song and the rest doesn't feel like that song.

tesla is €95k, lexus €43k. Tested a BMW and hated it, audi is ok but boring. I hate mercedes. Cars are really expensive in holland.

The first time I heard "Get Lucky" I was quite bored, and then a few days later I randomly couldn't get it out of my head. Weird how that works.

I get that a lot with Daft Punk, and is why I don't like them much.

Or that I didn't like them much. The Tron soundtrack is amazing. When they're making music instead of trying to be catchy they're great.

i dont know much about cars, but if someone has a disposable income of 95k to spend on a car, id assume they are pretty money. Lexus/Tesla names just dont hold the same worth compared to BMW/Mercs/Porchse/ Can prob even get a Aston martin for 95k?

but i dont know ****, i paid $100 and ride a girls bicycle around bangkok
05-15-2013 , 06:23 AM
no cars are taxed different. The tesla is green so he can purchase more expensive whereas a "normal" car his budget is 45 or soemthing

This is probably true, but I think Tesla has guaranteed they will include an option to resell the car back to them at the same residual value of the Mercedes S Class. It's a sick deal if it's actually a good car.
