I was at the casino last night and listening to Phil Hellmuth's "Play Poker Like the Pros" on my headphones. New to the Brat's teachings, felt like trying something new, and I buy in with the max. Phil says step one is to identify the "animals" at the table. Mouse (super tight), Lion (tight but creative), Elephant (calling station), Jackal (maniac) and Eagle (the rare, perfect player). He says the best way to stack off a Jackal is to isolate him. I get to the table and immediately spot the Jackal. He's got a deep stack, around $510 and is raising every other hand.
I limped a few weak hands trying to outflop him but really didnt have any big wins against him. Then I looked down at A
K
. The Jackal limps from MP+2. I raise to $6 from the SB and the BB calls. The Jackal backraises to $17. We both call.
Flop is A
K
6
I check, buddy to my left checks, and the Jackal bets $15. I check-raise him to $35. BB folds, and I've got the Jackal HU. He calls.
Turn is 8
I check and the Jackal bets $50. I go into the tank and really start to think about what he has. My initial thought is a lower two pair, K6 or 86. After about a minute, I shove the rest of my chips in for $135. He hesitates very briefly and calls the second check-raise.
River is 7
He flips over 6
2
and says thank you.
Was this the right approach against this type of player?
