This is our new beginners' melting pot where you can ask anything about PLO, such as questions about the rules, sites to play, optimal stats for pre-flop play... anything you need that isn't thread-worthy on its own. This also allows beginners to meet other beginners easily.

Some new threads can be merged with this one if the mods deem it justified. Have fun, and gl on your PLO journey!

Everyone has ~100bb, probable tag/reg over nothing sample raises UTG/HJ, blinds has one ~60vpip non-3bet happy fish, i'm on button with 1 suited unconnected pocket pair, QQ72/JJ93/KTrT3s etc, at what pair does set mining become questionable/bad?

i would say below QQ, you're going to want to having something besides single suited to go with the pair, like: JJ87ss, TT97ss, 9987ds, etc. are usually ok, but hands like JJ93ss and TTK5ss are likely to be a bit less profitable

Assuming ur talking 6max. Raggy pairs (w really bad sidecards) I personally don't play below Jacks, cause u'd be flopping middleset most of the time and being less confident about stacking off. Also, you need to be positionally aware, I avoid playing raggy big pairs from EP as it's harder to pick up small pots. Vs bad players limping is prob optimal

as someone being very late to the party but now eventually trying to make the move from NLHE; how much have the games changed since about 3 years ago?

specifically, how good is your average small stakes reg?

I think the best answer to this is that PLO remains a somewhat unsolved game compared to NLHE. People are spewing a ton pre and post, some are playing way too weaktight. Understanding the dynamics of starting hands involved in a 4-card game is more difficult, which results in constant overplaying of weak made hands and draws. The ABC-style pre-flop nits are easier to exploit as it's easier to rep strong hands postflop regardless of your starting hand, as opposed to NLHE where it's harder to make big hands and you can confidently stack off with your overpairs/TPTKs.

Having focused on PLO for 5months or so I reckon it aims it up well

Should i play hands like AKJ2o, AKT5

Basically, any hand with 3 broadway cards. I would really like to know more about these starting hands from all positions (6 max games) and mindset when seeing the flop?

You can play them from Co
And Btn when its folded to you in all other positions, not it up a lot and look for reasons not to play a hand....e.g UTG KJT9 dam I have a gap at top of hand, I will fold as this devalues my hand

AKTx for 6max is premium when ds, strong with an Ahi suit, decent with any other suit and only good for stealing blinds when rainbow. Suitedness usually translates into playability.

What are normal VPP rates for PLO50 6-max? FPPPro says about .43 VPP per hand, but in my 2 short sessions I only got .38 and .31. I was playing 30/23, so I wasn't nitting up a seat either. Also, was would you estimate your VPIP needs to be in order to get at least as many VPPs under the new contributed system that you would have with weighted?

For over 1500 hands, i see .37 VPP per hand in my holdem manager 2.

Is playing any suited Ace from the button a good idea, or should I have something else to go with it?

A lonely suited A is not enougt on most situations. It should have some connectiveness or a pair to go with it.

Here's a frequent situation that I'm not quite clear on how to handle. Let's say we have a nut flush draw, on the flop, in position -- but we don't have any other draws or a made hand, and we don't have AA (or KK, you get the idea). Lets further assume that the board is not paired, so we are drawing to the nuts.

Is this always a pot/re-pot? It seems that calling is worse than betting because we get no fold equity. Do we ever fold in this scenario?

If the answer is 'sometimes call', then when should we call? If we are heads up? If we are heads up and the villain is a nit? or the villain is loose passive? or a maniac?

Or maybe we should call if its multiway, because we have less fold equity? What if its multiway and the villains are all nits, or stations, or maniacs?

I am amazed at the rake on PLO25 (Stars) but is it worse elsewhere?

What level does the rake get down to a more reasonable level?

Same everywhere. Get a good rakeback deal or grind a crapton if you want to beat the micros

Starts getting reasonable at around 100PLO. Even at 50PLO, I rake more than 22bb/100

I know there's poker pro tools.com but what other gd software/tools/websites are there for PLO... things like equity calculators, combo calculators, simulators, etc....

Some HE examples being things like EV slice, stove, combinator, sngwhiz, etc

Also can anyone recommend any reading material websites, i've come across omahaplanet and donkr just wondering if there's any others that are exceptional...

Thanks

So would you say, its ok to play Suited A from button when folded around to you and you have two regs on blinds with VPIP less than 25%? Just to steal?

I'd say playing any suited A is profitable from the BTN, but that means you can't just play fit-or-fold, gotto be willing to take a stab here and there and rep other draws too.

However, since this is a beginner's thread, I'm probably gonna agree with Slimy in the end. Open up your range when you gain confidence.
