Hi all,

1/2 plo5. Loose maniac is driving action pre, raising all sorts of trash. Hero has l/rr a couple times with AA but lost them all. (No one folds!) Table is a little resentful of hero at this point. Everyone is basically a fish.

Anyway hero rather than face a pot sized raise by maniac raises himself over a limp to $20 in SB with A5678dd, maniac calls in BB, ss fish in straddle raises to $90, EP limper calls, hero calls, maniac calls. $400 eff.

Flop ($360): JdTd2c.

Checks to ss who jams his last $30, limper calls, hero ships $400.

Edit: I thought the 2 was a 4 but it wasn’t. So no bd wrap.

Thanks,
DT

Both pf raise and flop jam seem bad.

A8765ss is a very average hand, you do not have an equity advantage to push, and will have poor position postflop. Folding pf can be a reasonable option if hero anticipates additional bets / whipsaw potential is there.

Flop check being better than raise involves a lot of assumptions. A couple thoughts:

First knocking everyone out is likely a modest equity gain vs protected players - even though it does secure our ability to see a river.

When hero is called by one or more players it will result in more negative ev than neutral ev scenario. Its pretty easy to be drawing to 4-5 outs.

If hero wants to gets stack in on flop, maniac may jam if we call anyway, and other player is more likely to call him than us (or hero and maniac) - so checking may increase the chances of getting all in on the flop with our mostly bare flush draw anyway, improving our equity.

Finally, if it checks through and we brick on turn, it will normally be an easy decision to fold.

Note: there is a Huge difference between a8765ss and ds, but you still probably do not want to play it too agressively from sb. In a wild game you could consider trying to get it all in multiway pf.
