Effective stacks 500

Hero has 9s8d6s5h in SB

Villain (competent, tricky) raises to 17 in MP, hero flats, everyone else folds

Flop 5c5s3c , pot 40

Hero checks, villain checks

Turn: Kd pot 40

Hero bets 35, v raises to 100, hero calls

river Js, hero checks, V pots to I believe 275?

Hero???

I know he has some KK/JJ in his range but not a lot of other boat combos. folding here seems bad, he has to bet his entire range on river here i think

Your play really hasn't given him any reason to believe that you have a 5.

He could be doing this with AAxx, AKxx, KJxx, Kxxx, as you said KKxx, JJxx or basically any hands that he thinks you'll fold too a raise.

Did you check flop with intention of check raising?

Dont agree with this statement, when Hero leads out OTT and calls a raise i would say his range is very 5xxx heavy.
Dont expect villain to ever be bluffing in this spot, KKxx like always.

Agree with Travbana and i think you played the hand great if you folded river.

snap fold
not trying to be results oriented but I think you can x turn too, it might make sense vs. a player described as competent/tricky to have some trips in your turn x/c range, and you have just about the weakest kicker you would have here for trips.
Against more aggressive players who will hammer turn and riv vs. Hero's perceived capped range (once we x flop and turn), x'ing this hand ott is definitely a strong consideration (although I guess we could x turn with some trips that have other equity like 7654, this hand does need some protection).

i was intending to c/r flop. v knows im competent as well and probably isnt blasting off with KK on turn. seems like an odd line for him

Maybe true if you have a read in similar spots but I can tell you I sure am playing kk this way OTF and OTT as it's the only way to win a big pot and overfull to underfull is a great money maker.

I agree checking turn is optimal. Yes it suck to give a club draw a free shot but there are only 6 out there. Checking also gives you some balance and offers you protection vs thinkers.

Why are w c/r this flop? What hands continue that we beat? What better hands are folding? What's our plan if V flats and we are stuck playing ****ty trips OOP in a bloated pot vs a tough opponent?

"Bad trips" is something like KK65. On the flop, obviously.

9865 has roughly average equity for trips, and is above average for bare trips. All three kickers are live to the 3, and one kicker is also a straight card (T985 is marginally worse for example). It only starts to perform less well when villain's range is narrowed to 5x+, so I'd avoid x/r flop -> bet turn lines.

i'd fold pre

flop is a decent lead

Turn is probably a fold after he raises unless you wanna call the river bet - The K makes KK a boat which is real possibility for this hand.
