In a 3 bet hand let's say 4way pot you flop the nuts with something like jj86. Flop comes 754 and two people are all in one with aaxx and the other with 77xx. Seen a SINILIAR hand in pokergnc and want to know is there a way to control the play in a way? It seems like plo games are becoming insanely loose and these type hands happen often. Just wondering if besides playing tighter of if there are any suggestions for not getting demoralized from lossing said hand when a card comes to pair the board. Happens alot hands like these and getting demoralized in these situations become something hard to get over as the pots tend to be so monsterous and happens much more quickly and directly than Holden. Is there any strategy or anything we could do to not get into these spots which could be demoralizing in a way or just trust the percentages and make sure you have a large enough bankroll to help with it. Tyvm

I guess just setting the tone as someone who is tight because lots of times from the beginning of play, players are mixing it up.

But welcome to any suggestions.

I'd say one third of the time or maybe one fourth it's a game where players are playing this way. But in plo I feel even more so than Holden if you fold pf players give you respect and adjust there play more than in Holden which is 3-5x slower in this regard.

Depending how deep the game is majority of time in 150bb or less spots The money will just getting in on the flop with those types of hand sets vs straight/wraps&flush draws combos and a much higher chance especially if it was 3bet pre.

The best way to reduce variance is to increase your edge. The standard dev is somewhat out of your control

I agree that increasing your edge will massively reduce your variance. I'd also add that you can work on your mental game to deal with the swings and that you are going to lose many hands where you are a massive favourite. And a final point is that you can play a lower variance style at microstakes and avoid marginal spots. You will sacrifice some EV but there are so many spots where you can get it all in as a massive favourite that you can still win

Variance is a part of PLO and becoming a better player is the only way to reduce it. Learn, learn, learn...get better and swings will not affect you at all.

The better you are compared to the rest of the field, your downswings will be lower.

Most of the players think they are better then they actually are and when they go on a downswing they dont realize they lost way more then they should have because of their leaks that they are either not aware of or they dont wanna work on them at all.

Thanks Donk def. Learning and starting to even from when I posted this look at variance differently. In a more mature approach. Thanks again.

The variance is inherent in the game. Even good players experience a lot of variance. Jnandez (whose book you should consider reading) wrote that he has lost 10 buy-ins in one session. Wow!

The fact that equities run closer and the pot-limit betting structure mean that you often get pot-committed or have to put it all in with thin value to realize your equity. Playing mathematically correctly will lean to consistent earnings over time, but nonetheless there will be a lot of swings up and down along the way.

Therefore, the aspiration to "reduce variance" is, I think, misplaced. The variance is inherent to the game. Instead, I would focus on strategies to cope with the variance. This includes:

1. Have an adequate bankroll, so that you don't feel anxious about losing your savings. You need at least 50 buy-ins for PLO.

2. Play a lot of hands. Variance due to bad cards or unlucky run outs will average out over time. Don't even think about evaluating whether you are a good or bad player with less than ten thousand hands experience.

10 buy-in win/loss is standard per session, even for a nit like JN.

Poker is about maximizing edge, right? If we knew that there were a way to play worse but the variance would be smaller would that be the right decision? Taken to an extreme to make a point, folding every hand is PRETTY damn low variance
