5/5, maniac hosts opens to 15 (which means he was dealt 4 cards and wants to make sure we hit the max rake), one caller, i call with AJ92, button calls, SB calls.

button is a splashy holdem player who is stuck at least 5k in this game and does not really understand the adjustments needed for PLO. he has made a lot of really bad turn / river calls with dominated hands, 4th nut flushes, etc. although he hasn't been caught in an outright bluff, i do feel like he has been very stabby from late position and there have been a couple times where he bet flop or turn in position, and then folded to a turn or river lead when the board texture didn't change. basically he has tendencies of a bad LAGish NLH player. SB is pretty nitty.

button has around 3k, SB has like 1.4k and i cover.

flop (80) - A94
checks to me and i pot, button calls, SB calls

turn (320) - 8
SB checks, i bet 250, button calls, SB folds

river: 5

i check (?), button pretty quickly announces 900 (i didn't realize that this was an overbet until i went to post the hand, and the dealer missed it).

my live read was that he wasn't super comfortable, though i don't know this player well. i tanked for a while and to try and pick something up, i asked him what he was going to do if i had bet. he sort of half-laughed and said "i was gonna wait and see if you bet or not," which is a bit of a non sequitor. i'm not big on trying to soul read guys but i found this spot a little tricky because i'm not sure what this guy considers a value hand here. i was pretty sure he wasn't nutted based on his demeanor, but it seemed possible that he could value bet a backdoor straight or almost any flush if he interprets my check as 2 pair or a set. so, eventually hero called.

Correct, he should be potting all of his flushes. Play around with ProPokerTools. When we check this river 10% of our range is flushes, when he pots how often do we need to call? A lot more than 10%.

Can't imagine folding this when we block diamonds, have no clubs, look capped to sets, and he could be VBing a straight although that sizing is a little sus

Any particular reason you didn't bet the river yourself?

tbh kind of a feel play, felt like most of the hands i was beating on the turn that didn't improve were not calling a river bet, but he might bluff or incorrectly value bet worse, and i want to protect my range with some flushes when i check here.

Spoiler:
anyway he showed KQcc63dd and we win

Well, those could be good reasons, but then of course you have to call the river, that was part of your plan.

This would be very bad considering the situation. Can’t just apply solver ranges to this spot.

As played I guess you gotta just call. Have a bit too many blockers for a spot where he could def find enough bluffs. Another thing that bad hold em players will do too much is bluff bottom of the range, which doesn’t work that way in plo.

Agreed with all of this.

What do you guys think of checking the flop? I feel like the hand doesn't have that much future playability, many runouts will be tricky to play. Or maybe I have just played too much 5c lol

I can't see river ever not being a call after checking (i'm ignoring overbet). *ignoring xr scenarios for simplicity

I lean towards 3! pre but seeing as your hand plays multiway I get it.

Not crazy about the flop sizing given your range is somewhat capped with the initial call.

I normally would fold pre though this is an ok hand to boost the vpip if that’s needed.

As played you can’t raise and you can’t fold.
