Live 5-5, 1.5k deep

BTN straddles 10
SB folds
BB calls 10
HJ fish calls 10
CO [Hero] raises to 55 with Qd Tc 9d 8c
BTN folds
BB folds
HJ calls

Pot 135

Flop Ah Td 8d

HJ checks
Hero bets 80
HJ calls 80

Pot 295

Turn 5d

HJ checks
Hero bets 125
HJ tanks, then calls 125

Pot 545

River 4c

HJ tanks, grabs a lavender $500 chip, thinks about how much to bet, then tosses the chip in the pot.

Villain sees a lot of flops and calls a lot of bets, but he rarely gets out of line when he bets or raises. When he pots out of position, he's been showing the nuts every time.

Hero?

Seems like a turn check

Even a fish can see the Flush .. now you are subject to a bloated bluff attempt OTR with Ace of flush or value. Whereas 'we' are more more than willing to bluff catch for a smaller amount OTR.

Based on your description the Turn thinking is probably NOT about bluffing the River. It's more do I want to raise here or see if the Board pairs?

Sure, it's possible that a fish would x/c two streets with a weaker flush, but since that didn't go our way we probably need to go with our profile of OOP nut betting. GL

Struggling with this flop bet. Clearly we have a pile of equity otf and very little to the nuts. Seems like villain being a calling station shades this to check back. It's close.

I would size up on the turn - river is an easy fold.

i guess we can lay this down, not a ton of natural bluffs for villain

Cant check this back its too much equity on the flop vs a limp/call range. Additionally vs a fish we should be able to play this fairly effectively on future streets.

Anyways, the turn is a clear check. Think of it this way: how many streets of value is this hand worth? If it’s worth 3 then go ahead and bomb it.

But usually Q hi flush here after the flop is worth only one more bet, which we can still easily get on the river. Additional benefits: we catch some bluffs and pot control vs better flushes.

Also, since you bet the turn just half pot, I guess you were planning to bet like 1/3rd otr when checked to. But notice how that is not actually extracting any more chips than checking turn and potting river. So you get all the downsides from betting the turn without any upside.

I generally see the case for checking the flop. Bottom two pair, third-nut flush draw, and non-nut gutshot isn't super strong.

But it's a fish with a wide, wide range. I get value from a ton of hands if I bet around half the pot (I actually should've bet less). And he's not going to check-raise me unless he has top set or nut flush draw + wrap.

I like checking the turn and potting the river when checked to. But I don't dislike my turn bet either.

Q-high flushes aren't that strong multi-way. But this is a heads-up pot.

If I had a K-high flush, I'd definitely bet flop, bet turn, and call river. With a J-high flush, I'd check turn.

I recently switched from NLH to PLO. The idea of pot controlling strong hands is a little foreign to me. I used small bet sizing and balanced my ranges in NLH so I didn't have to check back strong hands. I guess I should be pot controlling Q-high flushes heads-up in PLO...

Flop is player dependent to me, I think bet or check is OK.

Check turn like 99% of the time unless spaz whale free money plays with eyes closed etc.

If you keep trying to go for 3 streets with medium flushes you are going to get wrecked.

Even in heads-up pots when villain is near-100% VPIP?

i think turn is close, but betting with the intention of checking back a lot of rivers is defensible. a whale can call this turn hoping to boat up. we have a two street hand, but there's an argument for making it flop / turn rather than flop / river.

river is gross, i probably fold, the combo of turn / river actions usually means a ton of strength. the tank-call turn and lead river line seems more like nut flush that doesn't want to see the board pair. against a more creative or splashy player you do sometimes have to call here, but paying off guys like this is the worst.

I think I prefer betting flop/turn than turn/river too. And if I'm not going for three streets (with small turn and river bets), then I prefer a large bet on the turn.

Yeh I prefer betting flop/turn checking river - if you check turn you cap your range and are really face up betting the river. Betting the turn you get some value from worse flushes that might fold to a river bet, force sets/two pair to call another bet(not all but some).

Edit - on a sidenote it's sort of a cool idea to check the turn bet the river smaller vs better players who will turn hands into a bluff at a high frequency.
