Hi all,

5/5/15, we open T8764ds in cutoff and get button and straddle to call. $625 eff.

Flop ($150): TA4r. We flop bottom two. It checks through.

Turn: 8. No fd. I bet $75, button calls and straddle folds.

River ($300): A. I check btn $250 I crai $500. We block a lot of boats and unblock missed straight draws but lose to a lot of better one pair hands that we want to fold like KK JJ QQ JT.

Thanks,
DT

Those one pair hands that beat you, why would he bet them? Having a lot of blockers to different boats is worth very little. He has 5 cards and is not going to fold any overfulls, only his underfulls, and even then you've made it so small, and you're not repping AT very well, that he might just call all those hands anyway. But his most likely hand is a good A, which again isn't folding enough of the time here barring reads. The A is not a great card to bluff, either, so he's weighted away from bluffs.

So is that an F or a gentleman’s C?

F I'm afraid. At this sizing, given I don't think he's folding any of his value range, I prefer a call.

It's a low score. Very difficult for Hero to rep many boats this way given the line.

T and to a lesser extent 8 blocker aren't completely worthless but Hero can't even make a pot-sized raise on river.

Betting the turn also likely a mistake.

Shouldn't we bet the flop to protect our hand? River is tough to x/r as his value range is Ax+ - I don't think he bets KK/QQ type hands here especially for 250. On the flip side its hard for him to have a boat, and hard for him to call without one. I guess we can rep 88/A8 - think it just comes down to how thin he value bets and if he's folding essentially all non boats to a raise.

We're doing pretty badly against a calling range and can happily turn our hand into a bluffcatcher or value bet ourselves on any card T or lower. We probably want to get AT and maybe A4 if it comes with perhaps a gutshot or 2xbdfd, but if we bet this we end up with no boats in our range, which we would like to have.
