You need to realize you are unlikely to have much FE so you are always making value bets. Hands like unsuited As can't try to drive a real flush out of the hand so they are worth less. Need to play a solid not splashy style. If you play an otherwise solid game but like to bluff too much this buy in keeps you from doing it.
Playing short doesn't lower your variance, it more than likely increases it as you're forced to GII in 30-40% equity spots as stack sizes give you the odds. Playing short in PLO does one of two things - if you're really good it lowers your edge and if you're not good it lowers your loss rate. The deeper you are the larger your edge assuming you are better than your opponent. With high rake and generally lower edges in PLO than hold em when comparing good vs bad players, I would focus on playing deeper which will also improve your game quicker.
