play PLO5 tighter PF than PLO4? play PLO5 tighter PF than PLO4?

I recently read on here, but forgot which thread, that PF range for PLO5 should be tighter than for PLO4.

This is counter intuitive to me as, given that hands are closer in equity PF, players can play more hands, especially in position.

Or, may be play tighter upfront and looser on the button?

But more importantly, why?

In terms of frequencies they're not very different actually (rake dependant obv). The ranges are calibrated differently though. For example KK is a monster in 4c whereas KK without significant side cards plays pretty poor in 5c....let alone oop. For that reason we open a large portion of KK ep in 4c and less in 5c (still a considerable amount in 5c but like 20-25%ish less I think). Also for this reason 5c ep ranges will be far more calibrated towards well connected rundowns and multi part/equity stacking combos. In theory land there's actually a micro portion of our AA we're just open folding in ep....to show the range assymetries between 5c and 4c.

5c plo is a far more equity driven game than 4c but, like in any game, if you play too many hands youll end up:

A. Constructing very poor ranges that can easily be taken advantage of on a number of textures.
B. Will often get into spots where we're dominated and get in stacks at an equity disadvantage.
C. Pay a ton more in rake voluntarily entering the pot with both low raw equity and poor realization.

Our money in 5c plo doesn't come from preflop as much as it can from 4c or in nl. Our money in 5c and 6c plo comes from coolering as many dipshits who decided to speculate pre too wide. Sure we can still push equity preflop but it'll never be near the amount we can postflop.

I would assume that DTrunk will chime in as well ..

Just going from 6 combos of hands to 10 lends itself that a lot of the marginal combos that may end up winning a Showdown in 4c have stiffer competition in 5c. So the adjustment is to lean more towards stronger combos that can make some sort of nutted Showdown value. I wish we would play more in our area since the PLO pool is littered with Players who overvalue almost any flush draw when considering their 'call-ability' even when there's decent chips behind.

I don't think you're ever going to dissuade the Gambler very much if action will close with no further chip commitment .. but their pursuit of holdings that are more squarely in the middle or below average against a broader range of combos should lead the tighter Player to additional profits. GL
