A few reasons, IMO. Firstly, I think if you treat poker as a livelihood, you have to maximize your value sooner rather than later. It's a volatile career and if you play full time, you're more or less killing your resume in the process.
Secondly, if you don't move up, you don't know if you could double your earnings with the same amount of work (and risk if you are sufficiently rolled).
