Moving up BB rate? Moving up BB rate?

Serious question.

Is there a certain BB / 100 you feel you should be beating the game by, to move up to the next level?

I remember watching one of JNandez's videos a while back and he was saying that you should have at least 100 BIs to the next level, although you could do it with 50.

Thoughts?

Question 2 is possibly more important for several reasons, but first things first. Many poker sites have the lowest stake at blinds of $0.02/$0.05 and some poker sites go as low as blinds of $0.01/$0.02 which is pretty darn low. If you had the money to play higher, but were trying to follow some "beat the game for an certain bb/100 rate" before moving up, then you could be wasting a lot of time at micro-stakes for no reason especially if the rake is horrible. It would be insanely stupid if you had the money to play and beat PLO25 but were determined you were not going to move up until you could beat PLO5 for a certain win rate, again especially if the rake is worse. Plus leaning how to beat ultra micro-stakes PLO2 where there are 4+ players to every flop and less preflop open raising doesn't necessarily teach you how to beat any stake higher than that because the game changes. However, I will say trying to beat what stake you are playing for the highest bb/100 possible will help you reduce swings. But that doesn't mean play low stakes just to play low stakes...especially considering the horrible rake.

Tilt is the poker destroyer. The no crap truth is that most people do better with larger bankrolls because it is less stressful. Look at the blog and goal sections and you will see a lot of stories of people that stress and tilt when taking a 1 - 5 buy in shot at the next stakes up. The number of buy-ins tilts people when the number is low. Having 100 BIs before moving up isn't very efficient, but it is a lot more safe from a mental point of view and taking shots with 10 BIs so you can stay there longer is less stress than a 1-5 bullet shot.
