Villain BB: not much history
Hero CO: AcKdTc3h

$0.05 / $0.10 PLO GG Poker. Effective stack sizes 100BB.

Fold, fold, Hero raise to $0.35, btn fold, SB call, BB call.

Flop ($1.05): AhQc3d

SB check, BB check, hero bets pot $1.05, SB fold, BB call

Flop top and bottom pair. This flop hits my CO range (which I guess is a little wide). Villain has something so could be Q3 type hand, gut shot straight or a wrap around the AQ that they didn't 3bet preflop

Turn (3.15): 3c

BB check, hero bets half pot this time $1.58, BB calls.

I turn a boat so want to get some money in as I want Q3 to pay me off or a bare 3 as well. I have the nut flush draw which is relevant in the sense that I know villain know isn't calling with that in their range so there isn't much they can continue with on a pot sized bet.

River ($6.31) Kc

BB checks, hero??

You've only got slightly more than the pot, so the sizing of the bet and judgment on the villain are what matter. You put him on Q3 (I wouldn't) so bet half the pot again, and of course call a checkraise.

If I put him on Q3 I would have potted the turn, and bet the rest on the river.

what do you put the villain on? For the record I didn't think they had Q3 as I block a 3.

I found this interesting that I think the only hand that would pay me would be Q3. I think anyone with a straight may be scared of the flush and paired board. Anyone with a flush would be scared of the nut flush and paired board. I think if I value bet small I likely won't make much money as everyone would likely fold. If I get check raised I have to call and lose a big pot.

the risk reward of betting seemed to be very risky in this scenario? But at the same time I'm always worried about better hands so don't value bet nearly enough.

I'd put him on something where the two cards he's playing are coordinated. For him to have Q3 then he has to have something like KQJ3. More likely he has at least three Broadway cards AQ, QQ, AKJ, AJT. Generally QQ would be more likely than Q3.

You can make a small insult bet, after making the half pot bet, but making a pot bet that looks like a bluff will get called once in a while.

Since you had the nut flush draw, all the more reason to pot the turn since nobody can be drawing to a hand that will give you action on the river, except something drawing live like AKK.

Your hand isn't that good on the turn. Pot it and take it, or pot it and get called by AQ who doesn't believe you.

No great answer here since there isn't much that can give you action that you can beat, but in cases like that, normally just don't play so you lose the pot. Bet and take it, and let them make some big mistakes by calling sometimes dead with AK.

I love this explanation. You are right that I should think of it as a 4 card hand. I just realized I never do that and just think of two cards.

I got cold feet on this one and just checked the river. Villain had QQ for a bigger boat so I saved some money but I’m not sure long term if that’s the right play.

Don't bet full pot on the flop. This is a relatively dry board, you have two opponents, and your range has all the top set while they can't/won't have many if any of that. Betting half or a little less does a better job than full pot.
