Hey guys,

Sorry if this is a super generic question, but I was just wondering what kind of daily swings were common playing 6 max PLO??

I'm going to start trying to learn the game better, and I'm trying to ready myself for this crazy high variance game

I just dropped 7 buy ins 40 mins of 12 tabling

i lost 40bi in one day at 6m 1/2 on stars[12 tabling] and i have a pretty decent winrate. if your breakeven or a marginal winner the swings could be ridiculous

Anything between +10bi and -10bi is pretty standard everyday stuff. I'd feel much more comfortable playing NL 6max with 30bi bankroll than PLO 6max with 60bi bankroll.

I play a laggy 4 table style and it's pretty regular to lose 4-5 BIs in half an hour doing nothing wrong. When I started I hit a wall at one point where I won no significant hand for like 8k hands. That cost me about 40 BI.

It's funny though, over the last 35k hands my std. dev in PLO is about 192bb/100 and over the last 25k hands of NL, the std dev is like 138bb/100. I'm about as laggy in both games compared to the norm, but my winrate (before rake) in PLO is gigantic, so it lessens the variance alot.

NL is much higher variance than people think, and it's hard to have a big winrate given that everyone has a grasp of the fundementals.

20-30 bi swings on a daily basis here.

^Like all other things it depends.

Do you think you start playing bad/worse after dropping 5 bin?

I usually try to limit myself to max 5 bin's/session, if I lose that I can just sitout and take a break and jump back in if I think it wont affect me.

But for me 5 bin is not super consevative, I dont hit it that often actually (sessions are ~1hr or -5bin), this is more true for PLO25 and PLO50 than for PLO100

it's fine, but how much volume do you expect or want to play?

as far as variance goes
deep stacked ante games > 40-100 > shallow
mid stakes > low > micro

expect to win or lose 10x the buyin every now and again and plan your bankroll accordingly

be prepared to lose 20 BI in one day at least once a month

I suggest two stop losses, one "session stop loss" and on "daily stop loss". I think 5 is a perfectly normal session stop loss but it is a little low on the daily stop loss side for me -- but each to their own, do whatever you're comfortable with and whatever helps you upkeep good bankroll management & allows you to play your best game.

I'm definitely a "part timer". I have a job and family and all that jazz, so I'm lucky to squeeze out 2 hours a day to play.

you can lose 10 buy-ins and run above EV during that time

it's a sick sick game

but we love it

Keep making those deposits, I'm sure your run will change eventually

Spoiler:

yeah me too, i find there is hardly any swings for me at PLO25 because its more passive but PLO50 I'm swinging all over because my edge is much smaller, if any

But the rake is ******ed at PLO25. You need a 17-20bb/100 winrate just to grind out anything.

idk I've just been looking at my database and its not much different
rake has been at 18bb/100 at PLO25 and 16.9/100 @ plo50 for me

although I have 0.65BB at PLO50 and 2.25BB @PLO25, running worse on Plo25
but i tend to tilt easier with more money involved

I feel like I get weird variances depending on the days. I went through a couple sessions where I just hit NO hand and whenever I did, it was underfull vs villains overfull. I convinced myself that poker was rigged to justify my losses, naturally. So I was curious and started writing down how well I played, what I won, how long, etc.

On some days, I usually get two days straight where I play decent and play around above break-even. Then one day where I do really good, where virtually every single hand I play seems to hit the flop. Then I have about 3 days where I get garbage hands over and over. It's not a strict cycle obviously, but its usually a guideline for how things go which I thought was kinda odd. Anyone else have any similar variance?

20bb's per 100?? Wow, that sounds like a very high win rate. Or is it??

the rake is bad, esp. for people trying to 30-50bb stack the games

I don't see how you can beat it playing half stacked

I run absolutely same as you. My only concern is lose minimum during the garbage days and looking forward to heater session
