Online app game. Game is overall loose-aggro PF and passive-loose after the flop.

2-4 PLO with .25 ante.

Eff. Stacks $700

Straddle for 8, folds to hero on button with Q J J 4 .

I make it $24, only BB calls.

Flop comes
J 8 5

BB checks, Hero pots for ~$66. BB calls.

Turn ($200 in pot)
6

BB checks pretty quickly. Hero...???

Unblocking clubs and all other sets this is a bet(1/2 pot? whatever would leave you a psb on river?), calling a c/r. I'm not great at live tells, but isn't BB less likely to have nuts when he checks quickly?

I think I would bet something like 1/3 pot here.

I hate checking / giving a free card.

Odds calculator tells me you are ~57% to win if villain has QT98 with 2 clubs, which would warrant the flop bet call. And if villain has that, a bigger turn bet in theory won't price villain out so I think a ~1/3 pot bet works.

You are ~23% to win if he has 97xx.

Tricky if villain raises turn --- could be 97xx or a weaker set.

You still have the best hand a large % of the time - keep betting. Not really a bad card - a Q or 7 would be worse.

I don't see the 6 as a terrible card, you have a 4 in your hand so you're blocking some of the hands that would be drawing to the straight. Your opponent is more likely to have a hand with clubs or T9 than to show up with the 74, 97 is a possibility if they held a rundown hand like T977 or something though.

Still, as others said, the quick check usually means they didn't hit. If they did hit, they might pause for a second and consider their options, especially if they made the straight but don't have or block the club draw. I continue firing this turn, there's enough of his range we're ahead of that we don't want to give up a free card.
