PokerStars.net The Big Game- some answers for you

Hey guys, I read through the threads on The Big Game and wanted to answer some of your questions/concerns about the show and thought I'd start a new thread. Hope that's ok mods.

The Set: I originally didn't like the set either, but the more it was explained to me the more it made sense to have a flashy set rather than yet another set that looks like a living room. Poker fans want to watch good poker and I don't think they care all that much about the set, but to casual viewers, the set is more of a channel stopper. People see the bright lights and the futurist set and want to see what it's all about. So yes, it's not what you are used to, but you will get used to it and eventually won't pay any attention to the fact that it's different.

Loose Cannon: A lot of you are complaining that the LC is an awful player. Not all players are created equal, and in the first six weeks I think you'll see 3 decent players and 3 guys who just aren't very good. I thought Earnest was great for the show and had tons of charisma. Not all the LC's had that quality. Each week the LC will add a very different vibe to the show. Next week, we have a quiet guy playing who played pretty well I thought.

My Seating Position: It's an absurd assertion to think I chose the seat to the left of Wiggins. The seat draw is completely random each week and you'll see that I'll end up sitting in all kinds of random seats. The LC will always be in seat one, and the rest of the pros draw cards to see where they sit. There is actually an LC who played far worse than Earnest coming up in a future week, and I was in seat 4 that day.

Amanda Leatherman: In my opinion, she is a triple threat: beautiful, great personality, and she knows poker. She'll be wearing different outfits each week so if you didn't like this weeks you'll probably like next weeks. I will say, that I agree they put too much makeup on her, she is the most naturally beautiful woman I've ever seen and I think she looks better without makeup on. Her role on the show will increase also, she'll be more a part of it in later episodes.

Needling Phil Hellmuth: PH and I are friends. I always needle him, and he needles me back. When he lost that pot to the amateur, of course I'm going to cheer! If I lost the pot to Earnest I would fully expect the guys to be rooting hard for Earnest. He is the "contestant" on what is a cash GAME show.

Stats: Most of you love the stats and readers here were basically the target audience for that addition to the show. We felt you guys would both appreciate and enjoy the stats as well as the fact that you can see EVERY hand on the website.

Casting: The first week we did use mainly familiar faces, but you will see that on our show more new pros get an opportunity to play than on any other televised show out there. It will NOT be the "same old, same old" that you are used to. We'll have tons of new great players showing up over the next few weeks including: Eugene Katchalov, Prahlad Friedman, Lex Veldius, Chau Giang, Dani Stern, Isaac Haxton, Justin Bonomo, Vanessa Rousso, Abe Mosseri, Jason Mercier, etc. Also guys, you should understand that sometimes the LC is going to bust and he'll be replaced by a pro and the show will go on! It will be 6 pros playing for the remainder of the week when that occurs.
One week in particular I think you guys are really going to like: LC, Dani Stern, Prahlad Friedman, Eugene Katchalov, myself, and Phil Hellmuth. You'll really enjoy the poker that week I think. Some very interesting hands come up.

A lot of what you are seeing with our show is new to you, and different. I get it, sometimes when you are used to something, anything new might seem a bit odd, but don't write it off, I genuinely believe the more you watch the show the more you are going to love it.
One more thing, you WILL have a chance to be a part of this show. The Daniel's Room games on PokerStars were designed to help cast the show with some of you guys who play on Stars. Obviously with any TV show a bit of personality helps, but if you are crushing those games you might get on the show.

I think you need to add more of an incentive for the LC to gamble after hes up over 150k or whatever, that way they don't just sit on it like Earnest did.

Daniel, i thought you hated UB?

Why do you let that idiot play on a STARS show wearing the cheating/scumbag UB PATCH?

Why associate yourself with scum?

It generally airs around 2am, but of course you'll need/want to check local listings of your local FOX affiliate. If you miss it you can watch all the episodes AND EVERY hand individually at http://thebiggame.pokerstars.net/episodes/

enjoy

Thanx for the post DN. I liked the show a lot and plan to watch from now on.

Thanks for taking the time to write this Daniel. Was pleased to see you re-suckout (for a change) on Tony in the QJ hand.

Agree that there should be more incentive for the LC to play after he gets up a little.

this.

maybe an extra 100k to the LC that wins the most each season or something. Ernest was just the worst ever. l/f'ing non stop. the guy would literally fold anything but the nuts on the river if u put in a big enough bet once he was up money. he was just painful to watch. obv they wont all be like that and it would be 1 thing if he was just bad and stationy or something. he was just so nitty bad that it wasnt even fun to watch. the whole PH vs TonyG thing saved a lot of the entertainment of the show.

Re: PokerStars.net The Big Game- some answers for you

ok, thats cool and all but maybe they should offer more or something. i guess its prob still gonna be pretty hard to make a guy who really needs the 50k play a hand tho w/o offering some really ridiculous incentive like 500k+. it just seems like since they are playing so big a lot of these guys may just nit it up once they get a 50k+ profit going.

This is like zero incentive for someone as fishy as Ernest Wiggins.

Actually scratch that, he seemed pretty oblivious about how bad he was. He had Boo as a coach.

Re: PokerStars.net The Big Game- some answers for you

1. We invited ALL pros from all sites. PokerStars is the title sponsor, but I thought it was important that we invited all poker players. We invited The FTP pros as well, but they have decided not to support our show. If we had JUST Stars pros and unaffiliated pros I think the show loses some of it's legitimacy so it felt like the right thing to do, inviting everyone "kum bay ya."

2. Incentive is offered to the LC to continue to play, a 50K NAPT passport with loads of press opportunities etc. and a chance for them to make a name for themselves if they want to. Obviously if someone is up an amount that is significant to them, they have every right to tighten up. If someone is up just $7000, though, they may decide to play another week and try for that passport. They absolutely have mathematical incentive to ALWAYS play, much like on Deal or No Deal. On that show, taking the deal is always costing them EV, but some will do it because the money is important to them.

But you owned him though. It was kinda cool seeing how a random noob would do against the pros. It's often hard when 6 pros sit at a table because mostly you can't get away with the same stuff as you can vs a random. But I think you really showcased how you destroy weaker players in position.

PH deserves it. I think most of us viewers wanna see him tilt as that's the entertainment value he's bringing to the table. It sure isn't his game.

Your needles were a lot better than they were on HSP. You seemed more happy playing as well, so then the needles get more enjoying than just trying to push him through his shoes. If a guy is enjoying himself and chats it up, there isn't any harm in a bit of needling.

VPIP/PFR says a little bit after 100 hands, but the rest of the stats, unless they're really through the roof like Tony's AF, isn't much meat on the bone.

Still it's cool looking at and most of us appreciate that.

Nice of you to drop in Daniel and lay out some things for everyone. I watched all week and truthfully don't really have one bad thing to say about the show. I thought that Wiggins guy was hilarious regardless of his play. Hopefully you guys record a **** ton more episodes than PAD does so there's always something new to watch besides reruns. One more thing. Whats up with you trying to act hood bruh? Give it up lol.

Nice Daniel, like the show a lot actually, good action. Way better action than some other shows, Tony G is really good for this. Hes a fun guy as well.

The set is fine, have no complaints. good lighting is all i care about.

allround great show, nice one!

LOL at this being possible.

Did they decide this as a whole, like a business decision, or each individually? It sucks we won't be seeing Dwan, Ivey, or Antonious, but I don't really see how it could be anything but a good business decision to have players on there sporting Full Tilt patches. I think them not showing up is a bad one actually.

And I have to ask even though I know the answer and it's a dumb question. Have yall considered trying to contact Isildur? Would easily attract more watchers that week than any other poker show in history, besides maybe the WSOP Main Event episodes.

In this case, Ernest made an extremely wise decision to take the money and run ... he was one more big pair away from losing all the money he won in a lottery type suckout ... the odds, about 1 in 500 to pull that off, is about his EV vs the top players in the world: he was as weak a player as he was charismatic.

I felt pity watching him being run over (most successfully by you!) with clearly no idea of how to defend himself. Nevertheless, the loose and friendly atmosphere did provide distinct content from the cut throat, though amiable, HSP mood ... plus Tony G vs Hellmuth abuse was classic.

Re: PokerStars.net The Big Game- some answers for you

I think getting players that are already at relatively high stakes (i.e. Daniel's Room's on Stars) will be a huge improvement to the quality of the show. Wiggins was so "ill-equipped" to play with this group it was really painful to watch Daniel and others put move after move on him. I mean if they were even close to equal it would be great fun to watch, but watching Daniel crush Wiggins with a bluff raise after Wiggin's 1/8-pot lead out bet (or something ridiculous like that) just kinda made me wince, like watching a heavyweight boxer destroy a featherweight, for example. Is that really fun to watch? Better players for the "LC" will go miles to making the show better.

If the show is still being taped and not already in the can, you might also consider expanding the table to 8 players with two "Loose Cannons". Might be entertaining to have two "Loose Cannons" tangled in a pot with each other. Plus expanding to 8 players I think you end up with more multi-way pots both pre and post flop.
