I don't recall that.

+1 for California Split, although the ending was a bit strange, it just sort of fizzles out.

Big Hand for the Little Lady was classic and still works. Well done on all fronts.

Worst is the recent Casino Royale remake. I mean, really -- James bond has Aces full of Jacks and makes the call of the other guy's all in, then is kicking himself for not properly reading the other guy's "tell" in a hand where the only thing that beats him is quad jacks. Like there is a poker player in the world who is going to lay down that hand based on a read that the other guy has quads?? Then the final sequence where Bond has a straight flush with 8-6 of spades - - the action is horrible and the final edit omits the post-flop betting altogether, which I guess is needed because there is no possible way that Bond would stay in the hand if there was normal post-flop action with three other players in the hand with huge cards. And then the dealer takes each players' cards and inserts them into the flopped display, removing the unneeded cards -- before the next player shows down. Ugh. Really, really, really bad.

Best individual poker scene is Shaw vs Newman in The Sting.

Yep.

Someone else mentioned The Grand. I was greatly disappointed in it because I thought it would be a Chris Guest type of movie. (It was, but more cartoonish.) However, I'll say I liked it better running into it during a second viewing. Far from a perfect movie, but better than I first thought, mostly because it hits a few notes that only the 2+2 type of crowd will get. I'd give that one about a B-.

I agree about the poker in Casino Royal being awful.

First hand in Rounders is similar though.

He runs the 2nd nuts into the first nuts in a HU pot in a short handed game, and then acts afterwards like he was playing too big of a game against too good of an opponent and somehow got outplayed, when in fact it was just a complete cooler.

However if you are looking for poker, there are a grand total of 3-4 poker hands in the movie. On the bright side, the hands actually make sense since he plays poker, its not the usual "OMG how did I not know he had the straight flush, I should have known my quads were no good" crap you see in movies.

Its well worth the $3 to rent in HD on Amazon Video

the sting is awesome, as some have mentioned. it's not a poker movie, its a con movie, but the one poker scene in it is awesome.

fyi if u just check out the poker scene, rewind a bit first, context is important

It is a shame when Hollywood, TV and movie is nothing like real life.

Can confirm that this is true.

The Joe Navarro tells were a recurrent thing in the movie and this was the last one towards the end of the credits.

Just checking out the poker scene would be an enormous mistake, the entire movie is fantastic.

Mississippi Grind is definitely worth the watch. I'd argue it's much more about degenhood than poker, but there are a few hands. My wife and I enjoyed it.

It's decent for degenhood but it's no Owning Mahowny

Owning Mahowny is such an amazing degen movie.

The problem with poker scenes is that they aren't appealing to a mass audience unless they contain rare events (quads vs straight flush, etc), and people who understand poker end up getting frustrated with them because they understand poker.

The mass audience that doesn't understand poker is always going to win this one, because they buy a lot more movie tickets than the people who do. Best thing to do is just accept it. It's similar for all kinds of other things where people with specialized knowledge end up scoffing at how unrealistically their specialties are portrayed.

interesting to hear the positive reviews on Mississippi Grind... I thought it sucked and had to turn it off an hour in.

maybe I'll have to try it again but I don't know... was pretty terrible.

It's not a "poker movie" but "Some Came Running" with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Shirley MacLaine has a couple of good poker scenes.

It's streamable on Netflix.
