Nice little story about Chip Reese/Phil Ivey Nice little story about Chip Reese/Phil Ivey

From Doyle's blog:

"I guess I am thinking about this matter because when my friend Chip Reese died, only Phil Ivey called and said, “I owe Chip a big figure. Where can I drop it off?” Chip was a very generous and caring guy who loaned a lot of people of lesser ability money regularly. None of them came forward with offers to pay debts that I know they owed. Oh, well, maybe I am still missing Chip and remembering what a great guy he was and how unfair it is that he left us so early."

Pretty cool of Phil to do that.

That is pretty cool, but could you post a link to the blog?

what does he mean drop it off? Like to Chip's family or did Chip owe Doyle or something?

I'm not saying that Phil did this, but I've always heard around the poker table that many of the gamblers/debtors paid their debts to the decedent/creditor by writing a check marked as paid in full and dropping it off in the casket of the deceased at the viewing.

The only thing this story illustrates is humanity's ability to pay debts when they possess the element necessary to satisfy said debt.

Not true. Even "posessing the elements necessary to satisfy said debt", most would not.

Meanwhile,

under the radar, Ivey's actions speak volumes of character.

There is a rare breed of men that "live" by their word.
Phil Ivey is a true gambler and some one we all can be proud of.

It was nice of Phil. Might have been out of line for Doyle though, as I am not sure, but Doyle was not relative. So perhaps others who owed Chip money made arrangements directly with his family.

I don't think Phil gave him the money, Phil wanted to know who he could give it to. Everyone knows Doyle and Chip were BEST FRIENDS. They were more family then some peoples actual families.

Phil is a stand up guy, a credit to the poker community.

I think he must be refering to "character" as the necessary element.

I dont get it. Paying the debt to the deceased's family is just plain decency.

Are we saying that Ivey is a credit to the poker community because he possesses basic human decency?

The real story are the guys that owed money and didnt pay up. What scum.

these three need to read Ansky's "Poker Manifesto" on integrity thread...it's a shame that the Godfather of poker can't collect from three young punks who have owed the man for over a year....f'ing pay up b*tches, your a disgrace to the poker community...give Doyle his f'ing money

Yeah, you'd think there would be more decent human beings in the poker community.

Erm guys, it's nice that Phil does this and all, but it would incredibly scummy NOT to pay the debt.

You are holding court as the KING and they are all your loyal subjects. Your opponnet is like a convicted child rapist and everyone in the court is on the edge of their seats awaiting the deliciously awful sentence you are about to hand down.

It is about the anticipation. Does he have it? Doesn't he? We dont know! We so very, very much want to know! Please show us. Please!?!

It is all about the "show". If you turn over the cards immediately, people will look at them, nod, and then move on with the rest of their lives. But if you slow roll, they will have an experience they will treasure the rest of their lives. They will have a story to tell their grandchildren.
