When to Donk Bet ? When to Donk Bet ?

12-31-2017 , 10:38 AM
Hi

Just wondering how the donk bet is now perceived, an example below I was thinking about using it as a sign of weakness hoping to initiate the re raise. Obviously the check raise worked out as he made top pair, but would you ever donk in this situation.

Cheers

Cannot give you an answer in terms of math or ranges, but I donkbet:

- when villain is extremely weak (~50/10), it is the bubble and the player is obviously desperately trying to get in the money because the SNG means a lot to him - probably underrolled/fun player that doesn't multitable ($5/$10 on the bubble with stacks too deep to shove or too weakish a hand to shove I would limp donkbet blind vs. blind, especially if I missed).

- when it is a multiway pot, the board is pretty bad for my strong (made) hand and the SPR is low. I'm usually donk shoving, especially on lower stakes where people will often call wide/with draws, even if I'm overbetting the pot.

In the case of your hand, I would not donkbet (rather c/r or c/c). If villain understands c-betting, he is more likely to c-bet if you check since he was the preflop aggressor. The more capable villain is, the more I'm checking. If villain is a loose passive fish that is capable of floating a very small donkbet with overcards or something silly and the board isn't scary for my (strong) made hand, I would donkbet very small (1/4 pot) just to extract some value and build the pot. If he views the donkbet in light of his own behavior (fish often donk to say This pot is mine! I bet first so you must be scared!) he will interpret it as weak, since fish love to trap. Then donkbetting is ok if there are a lot of turn cards where he would shut down and you wouldn't get any value anyway.

I'm not clear on what the buy-in is, but a lot of regs auto-raise donk-bets from unknowns (which probably works out pretty well for them against the general population). I've donked with sets before and had regs raise then barrel off.
