Trying to get back: Is SNG profitable in 2019? Trying to get back: Is SNG profitable in 2019?

I've been alway from online poker for a few years. I keep reading and following the game but hasn't played in a long time.

I was thinking about getting back and play SNGs but, when I used to play poker back then, cash games circa 2013-14, it was said that SNGs where already solved and it was almost impossible to profit.

That being said, I wonder how is the state of the game nowadays?

When I used to play, people usually said that SNG players were "rakeback pros", profiting only by RB. Don't know if it was or still is true.

I don't know if it was true at the time, but it certainly isn't today, as rakeback is pretty much gone

SnGs are one of the few game types that, in my view, have become more consistently beatable over time than the other way round.

I'm in Minnesota so I'm limited to merge and winning networks and seems like volume is low... I often have one or two games going while waiting for the others to fill... but they definitely seem soft.

I have yet to get ignition up and running but I except it's soft over there as well.

Even heads-up is beatable so the "solved therefore not profitable" is either false in its premise or in its logic

Of course it is false. The structure of SnGs is simply too complex to be "solvable". Most of the regs who play in much the same way are to this day inherently exploitable.

Where there is adequate traffic, SnGs at all levels remain beatable at a very good rate - I would argue at a better rate than cash games on the whole.

Still beatable, still reasonable traffic at low stakes...ceiling isn't there like it used to be, though (mid-high stakes traffic is low/sporadic). Think you're better off opting putting your attention towards cash unless you i) prefer SNGs or ii) don't have any interest in climbing stakes.

Allow me to tell you about the state of STTs in 2019. The games are infested with Russkis and vamooooooo Brazillians who love the game, but can leave you feeling quite perplexed at times. I've recently got back into playing STTs more regularly, and have made quite a few interesting observations. Firstly, a large number of regs have graphs that go straight up in a 45 degree angle and are printing money. However, you can't help but scratch your head wondering how the **** this is the case, because I've encountered 2 or 3 people who are competent post flop. When you're on the bubble and you get into a flip with a Russki or a Vamoooo, just forget it and resign yourself to regging another game, 'cause your ass is going home empty handed.

STTs are a lucrative venture if you're a rungood mofo and a volume monkey. There are definitely certain regs I try and avoid because they never lose flips, but if you want to play, sometimes you need to battle. You get the occasional player who limps in with J6s in early position, calls a raise and min bets every street, and cracks your bullets; but it's okay to lose to these guys because they're having fun and I love them. The Canadians are good for the game, the Germans are good for the game, some Russkis are good for the game, but they will severely impact your hourly when they go on a hot streak and bend you over.

Therefore, I exhort you to exercise caution when entering the realm of STTs. Go forth and have fun, and maybe blast some $200 hypers if you're running hot and don't see any Ruskis or Vamoooos in the lobby.

This post reads like it belongs in the "poker is rigged" thread rather than here.
