Of course, you can't make over $5K a month with non-HU non-spin SNGs alone any longer, except if you become an elite 6-18-man hyper reg (playing hyper satellites and/or mixing super-KOs and non-KOs).
When you're yet building a bankroll, though, microstake SNGs are still useful, especially if you're uncomfortable with spins.
Collin Moshman's recent recommendation (in a Pokerstrategy video available to all registered users) are 9-man turbos. While the rake has become disappointing there (12% on turbos and 15% on regular speed at the lowest stakes), I think there's still enough edge there to beat it - as $0.25 spins with 8% rake are beatable with a 10% ROI, the much slower $0.50 9-mans with the 12% rake must be beatable with double-digit ROIs as well.
I'll test them this week.
Also, of course, Stars isn't the only site to play STTs on - there are 888, Unibet, etc. But the main issue is that they hardly ever run at serious stakes any longer, so if you do want to earn a lot and aren't in a rush to earn money right now to pay your bills, then you can sacrifice short-term winnings to learn a poker format that has brighter longterm prospects due to higher variance - spins or MTTs.
If you go the MTT route, then you can start with Stars 45-180-man SNGs. Surprisingly, the rake is 8-10% on most of the microstake ones.
