DougL is in the well

Quote:
A stranger is being shown around a village that he has just become part of. He is shown a well, and his guide says, "On any day except Tuesday, you can shout any question down that well, and you'll be told the answer." The man seems pretty impressed, and so he shouts down: "Why not on Tuesday?" The voice from in the well shouts back: "Because, on Tuesday, it's your day in the well."
Here you go Lanyi, hopefully we'll do these more often.

Ask what you want gang, I'll do my best to answer. Any advice you find here is worth what you pay for it.

Re: DougL is in the well

So...What's your story?
edit: and first

Edit2: You're at a FR table full of micro 2p2ers. Who do you not want at the table? Who do you want at the table? Who do you fear the most/least? Where would you sit?

Same thing for 6-max.

Re: DougL is in the well

Which of the "Micros Grand Slam Events" (uHULA, MMT Challenge, 100/100/100 challenge, KOTKP) is your favorite?

Do you make/use notes while MMT'ing .50/1?

Do you listen to music, have the TV on, etc. while playing or are you all business?

Do you play any other forms of poker besides limit?

What's the L stand for in your name?

And seconding the "what's your story?" request.

Standard questions:

When did you start playing poker? When did you discover 2+2? Describe you progression (history?) as a poker player.

Re: DougL is in the well

Have you always had the stream and tree avatar and Boulder, CO location? Do you ever get the urge to mix it up a little bit and change those?

If I remember correctly, you don't use an avatar on PS. Strategic decision to make it slightly harder for regs to remember you or could you not find/decide on something you liked?

In your pooh-bah post you mentioned practicing tai-chi. Do you follow any formal school of Eastern philosophy or religion? Do you meditate before/after a long MMT session?

If you don't already know the answer to this you need to play more donkfest .02/.04 tables, horseaments and more-organized 2p2 events.

Doug, to beat Wookie to it: favorite beer? favorite mixed drink?

For myself: how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? Do you know what a woodchuck is?

Where do you find the time (and patience) to write so many detailed, thorough, insightful and well-written posts... often writing multiple paragraphs in response to frustratingly noobish questions. Are you secretly "Poker Jesus?" Congrats Doug!

I started playing poker in high school. I was in band, and we used to play on long bus trips. My HS marching band was from Oklahoma, and we did the Tournament of Roses and the Macy's Thanksgiving parades; I had a lot of time on buses to play poker. I stunk at poker, but I did OK in guts and bloody guts (2 and 3 card games where everyone at showdown had to push the pot if they lost).

I had a friend in Boulder who organized a monthly home game. He printed up a rule book of allowed games. It was dealer's choice with a dealer ante, irrc. He kept track of the buy-ins in a book, and after losing 5 months in a row, I got so mad I bought a book. Home Game Poker, irrc. Somehow I also stumbled on some 2+2 books, and that home game taught me that you could win at poker if you knew what you were doing.

I had some friends who were doing the startup thing in San Jose (you know, working 60-80 hour weeks, making a ton of money that they couldn't spend, etc) who took a yearly Vegas trip. I went to Vegas and didn't gamble other than poker. My first trip, I split gas with a buddy and took $300 for the entire trip; that's poker BR, hotel, gas, and meals. I got stuck about $80 my first day in the Harrah's 4-8 game, and decided I needed to quit playing so many hands. Later in the trip, someone told me that I was the tightest player he'd ever seen in his life.

I found 2+2 forums and RGP, and soon I was driving up to the mountain casinos twice a week. I played a lot of 2-5 spread limit poker. I had a blast, and the games were very beatable. Abdul and Izmet taught me to crush these no-fold'em games. I went back to Vegas, and I had money I won playing poker to buy in to the games. It was huge.

Jim Brier taught me how to beat the Vegas 10/20 games and above. It is that simple. His posts in Medium Stakes made it possible for me to win. I still believe that you can go LAG, you can start making thin bets/raises, but if you don't understand the fundamental play, you're screwed.

Before I got married and had a kid (the joy of my life, btw), I played in a lot of home games around town. There are some very good players, including a lot of people who win at 15/30 in Vegas and a couple of black chip players who play in NV and CA. The games were never much higher than 10/20, so you got some people who didn't respect the money.

I still think that the best thing about those games was the people I met; anyone who talks about how horrible the degens are that they meet in cardrooms confuses me. The best part of live poker for me is meeting people and hearing their stories. Especially in mid-stakes games, you can meet some real life winners. Sure, you meet some whining people in the throes of deneracy; imo, most people are decent or better, and people love telling you about themselves. For the price of winning their money, you can sit around for a few hours and hear about the cool things they've done.

Now, I try to make it to Vegas once a year. I started playing on the interweb last year. I've had some fun, made some money, and learned to play poker a lot better. I've also learned that posting >>> lurking, and I've learned a ton from you guys.

Edit2: You're at a FR table full of micro 2p2ers. Who do you not want at the table? Who do you want at the table? Who do you fear the most/least? Where would you sit?

Same thing for 6-max.
[/quote]

HULA taught me that you guys are a pain to play against. I can't think of one match where I am sure that skill was a huge part of the outcome. Playing against good players is the pits. That said, I'll try not to duck this 100%.

I've played at tables Absolution, Carl Winslow, and Bellatrix, and I guarantee you should sit out if you find one of them on your right or have them in a spot where you mind getting 3!. I am sure that BBB plays better than I do, and I'd pass on playing him. I've played with merryber (she's a big winning player in my DB), but she isn't enough of a LAG to be a huge pain at the table. I guess the people that bother me are the ones who 3! a lot, so we can co-exist without a lot of pain on my side.

(I'm going to have to make these responses shorter)

I'm not sure when the beginning was. I was here close to it, but I was kind of a late adopter to the internet. I was designing computers, and I told a lot of people, "why would I do this all day at work and then go home and do it for fun?" I was DougL in the previous version of the software. I registered, but had very few posts.

I think that for pure fun, the 100/100/100 was it.

I couldn't make notes playing 20+ tables. Another one would pop up. I'm not sure how it is possible if you have auto-popup tables requiring action.

Mostly, I'm locked in my dark office. Most of our CD collection is burned to my wife's computer upstairs, so sometimes I shuffle through the disks. If find it distracting, so mostly not. TV would be impossible.

Re: DougL is in the well

If you could ban a poster with 1000 posts or more, who would you ban, and why?

If you were to be given a custom title of your choice, what would you want it to be, and why?

What Micros strat thread helped you more than any other? What about a non-micros strat thread?

Mat Sklansky gets drunk and makes the mod forum visible to all users one night. Other than your own name, what's the first thing you search for?

Describe your perfect Micros home game. Who's there? What do we play? Stakes? How drunk are we (i.e., srs biz strategy or drunkern misbehavior), and how did we get that way?

If you would be banned from 2+2 unless you made at least 25 content-ful posts per week in either NVG or Politics, which do you take, or do you accept the ban?

You know, I'm going to give you a very boring answer to this. I live in Boulder; I know lots of homosexual people, and same-sex marriage doesn't shock me or seem odd. I know people who are in more complicated living arrangements than having just two people in them. One of my good male friends from college is married to a really nice guy. I don't have any moral stand on marriage. I'm confused as to how you can be against gay marriage. How can you tell people that they can't commit to each other?

I don't really find anyone's living/sleeping arrangements to be that notable, titillating, or requiring my approval/disapproval. The world is a difficult enough place without having someone tell you that now you've found an arrangement that works, you should do it another way.

Relative to the average micro poster, on what subject would you consider yourself an expert?
