7.022k/CRACKER_GANZA/tyler is in the well + poll: micros personalities!

sup bros,

Quote:
A stranger is being shown around a village that he has just become part of. He is shown a well, and his guide says, "On any day except Tuesday, you can shout any question down that well, and you'll be told the answer." The man seems pretty impressed, and so he shouts down: "Why not on Tuesday?" The voice from in the well shouts back: "Because, on Tuesday, it's your day in the well."
the last couple months for me have been a big transitional phase culturally, geographically, and careerily. evolution is a slow process, but the move from vegas to seattle is done and my new job begins next week so i wanted to take some time and reflect. what better place to reflect than inside the well (perhaps the inner surfaces are mirrored?)?

feel free to ask me absolutely anything. sex, drugs, rock & roll, gambling and non-gambling games, and whatever else about which you would like me to hold forth.

BONUS POLL: MICROS PERSONALITES!

this will be write-in votes, PM'd to me, and tabulated by me. i promise that i will not reveal your votes to anyone else. you are free to post your picks in this thread if you would like to discuss them. i, for one, am sure to be interested to hear some of the "whys" behind your answers.

these questions are asking about people in or from the micros. don't say El Diablo or Gildwulf or whatever. people who came from the micros, like Entity or Scary_Tiger or Milesdyson, are all fair game. active micros posters obviously count.

1. which poster would you most like to meet in real life?

2. which mod would win in a barfight on neutral territory: MrWookie, OziBattler, or kerowo?

3. which poster do you think is the best overall poker player? as in, if i said you have to pick one player to go and play in some unknown poker game, who would you stake in that game?

4. which poster do you think has the highest IQ?

5. who is the funniest poster?

6. if your ignore list had to have one and only one poster on it, who would it be?

7. which poster do you think makes the most money (at life, not just at poker)?

8. which poster would you least like to bring home to meet your family?

9. which poster do you think is probably the worst driver?

10. from which poster have you learned the most?

Awesome - I'm excited about your well.

Is this a mod-sanctioned well?

Can you remind me the background of why you lived in vegas and why you left vegas for Seattle?

Why don't you drink and if you once did, why did you quit?

Do you like me? Plus do you think I am a good poster?

What posters do you particularly enjoy interacting with?

Last edited by CrMenace; 09-02-2008 at 01:55 PM. Reason: Added bit about good poster.

1. Is pre-flop TAG (23/11 or whatever) the best way to approach the live 3/6 games (for someone who is relatively comfortable playing post flop) given the atrocious rake? What would you say are ideal numbers vpip/pfr for a typical such game. (or just move up to where they still dont respect ones raises?)

2. what is a good 3! range vs a decent lag open raise (SH game, in position)

3. what is a good cap range vs a decent lag 3-bet (SH, in position (TAG original raiser), OOP (HU))

4. how often do you deviate from these ranges?

5. blue chimay vs red chimay?

6. review Xylocain

7. [censored] or ****

8. Who snitched on my "wtf is this ****?" post yesterday?

9. Do you think its a good thing most hand posts deal with pots that are 10BB+?

10. do you **** **** ****** **** *********?

11. HU tourney small stakes, opponent says his computer is about to restart/crash and disconnects in the middle of next hand, do you sit out for him to return?

12. Where does the music come from.

I have my poll responses and plan to post them but want to give people a chance to think through theirs first.

I am glad to see you in the well Tyler and happy your transistions are working out. Questions.... OK

1) Why don't you play in SHENANIGANS?
2) If you could only play one. Forever. Poker or Chess? Why?
3) How nearly does your e-persona mirror your real life one? What are the differences.
4) What is your educational background?
5) Why are conducting your poll?
6) Are you a better poker player than Boz?

Thanks for what I have learned from you so far. I will have more questions. I will respond to your poll but some of the questions require some hought and I think slowly

Sup Serpico.

1. Design a universal hold'em notation system.
2. Design a web-based poker hand posting system that improves upon forum posts.

Sweet!

1. At what limit of online poker have you found that you really need to start adjusting your play from standard ABC/SSHE/whatever you want to call it to maintain a positive winrate?

2. If you find yourself at a table with 2 or 3 LAGs, do you just pack up and leave? And what if you're playing 6m, where all tables seem to have 2 or 3 LAGs?

3. Will you please have another music quiz?

4. Do you recall what the worst poker advice you got was that you ever actually followed for a while and then had to unlearn?

5. What was the first poker book you read?

6. I saw a guy with brown hair and a clipped beard reading a map on Sunday in the Mount Baker district outside a cafe near Seward Park. Was that you?

7. What's the best thing that you cook yourself?

8. Do you credit any particular 2p2 posters for having great influence over your game?

Re: 7.022k/CRACKER_GANZA/tyler is in the well + poll: micros personalities!

Who are some sub-1,000 posters that you think are the highest potential?

Which sophomore vets (~1,000-2,000 posts; i.e. Xylo, CrMenace, NIX...) do you think are wise beyond their years?

Which more senior vets is high postcount not reflective of ability?

What limit do you play?

How often do you play?

How much have you won?

What winrate is that?

Favorite poker accomplishment?
Favorite life accomplishment?
If you had to start all over again with playing poker today, what would you play and how would you go about it, learning/BR building/moving up/etc?
I remember the pics you had from climbing a mountain of some sort. Do you do a lot of climbing/hiking?
I know that you play and might teach chess, but that's it. What is the deal with you and chess? This is coming from someone who used to have a long history with the game.
Am I a good poster?
Does the fact that I missed my 2k post affect the answer to the previous question?

Poll answers will come later.

Is this a mod-sanctioned well?
no, but i don't think i'm stepping on any toes by starting one.

Quote:
Can you remind me the background of why you lived in vegas and why you left vegas for Seattle?
back in 2004, i worked a tech job for a popular online comparison shopping website. it was an unpleasant place to work -- one of the highest attrition rates in the industry due largely to a demanding, micro-managing ceo and a host of principal software engineers who coded as if they had extra chromosomes. note that this was an "unpleasant" white collar job so really i'm a spoiled brat. the work i was doing (build/release engineering) was actually interesting and my immediate boss was cool and there were a few worthwhile people working there.

regardless, i hated it. my personal life was also in turmoil as my best friend throughout college, and one of my greatest sources of strength, was moving cross-country to pursue a career opportunity. with all this going on i said F**K IT, quit my job, and moved to south lake tahoe for the winter to ski my brains out.

around this time i was also getting in to poker. it was all over tv, i had just played in my first holdem game during a vegas trip that summer, and i was starting to play 3/6 at bay101 and lucky chances. during the winter, i bought _WLLH_ and _SSH_ and _TOP_ and read and studied them in my copious free time, augmenting the study with the super-juicy 3/6 games at Harvey's.

when my lease ran out and the ski season ended, i decided that i didn't want to go back to the tech industry. i wanted to try something new and hey, this poker game is fun, so i picked up and moved to vegas.

i quickly determined that in spite of the low cost of living and my absurdly cheap rent, i wasn't going to last long playing 4/8 "professionally" but then i lucked into a job (craigslist ftw) running after-school chess programs in elementary schools. i had always wanted to try teaching and working with kids. i liked it so much that i stayed in vegas for 3 years.

those 3 years ended this past june. while i still love teaching and hope to return to it, i was tired of vegas with its haphazard urban planning and population of transient mouthbreathers. i was also tired of being broke.

fortunately, my bff from before and my other bff from san diego were all at transition points in their lives at about the same time so we decided to all move together to seattle.

i had visited seattle once or twice but mostly came here based on its reputation for hippie-loving culture; the availability of mountains, ocean, and live poker; and because it was yet another place where i hadn't lived.

and here we are. i can't imagine why you would need reminding of these few, simple factors that led me to move here. geez.

Quote:
Why don't you drink and if you once did, why did you quit?
i don't drink because i think alcohol is a bad drug. it's hard on your body, the side effects are numerous and unpleasant (headaches, dizziness, vomiting), and the main effects aren't that great either. i admit that being buzzed is kind of fun, but the one or two times i've been actually drunk just sucked. it's like, ok i'm over this and ready to go to sleep now, but when i close my eyes everything starts to spin.

drinking is also expensive, painfully mainstream, and there is some history of alcohol abuse in my family.

for me, there are better ways to experience altered consciousness or, failing that, more interesting things to do while sober.

Quote:
Do you like me?
sure. i mean, you're better than a sharp stick in the eye .

do you remember calling me a racist a couple years ago when i was talking about burritos? that always struck me as pretty funny considering my love of human culture.

Quote:
What posters do you particularly enjoy interacting with?
you might not expect it from my demeanor but i like most of the people around here. i wouldn't post if i didn't enjoy it (even if the enjoyment is sometimes of the masochistic variety).

i like debating with boz because he's always wrong but he always represents his side passionately .

i enjoy my aim chats with babar, who always has something cheerful to say, and fritos, who may as well be from another planet, and buzz, who is one of the sweetest, kindest guys i know.

i am grateful for all the people in between clueless noob and bored-with-life vet who answer the dumb questions and respond to "should i raise KK? how about when i make a boat?" posts so that i don't have to.

there are many people missing from this list. please don't feel slighted.

I'm willing to play the live version.

1. I'll go with BobT. I've read his stuff for a decade, and I have no name or voice to go with posts.

2. No idea. I'll vote Ozi.

3. That's very hard. Given recent visits, I could cop out with Miles or DaveC. I'd go with BBB as a regular.

4. Not one of the MIT or CalTech guys, hmmm. I wouldn't be shocked if you weren't a good test taker. How's your spacial acuity? I'll go Tyler.

5. Let's see, lol funny. I like Java.

6. I'm not much of an igone list guy.

7. One of the docs I'm sure. LeoDoc?

8. My family is pretty middle America conservative. It would have to be some sandal-wearing, neo-hippy bearded guy from Seattle. They'd see the clothes and hear where you're from, and you'd get polite-but-distant. Oddly enough, my friends would dig you completely. Is that odd?

9. No idea. Someone with tilt issues? Boz.

10. Lots:

Izmet and Abdul - for how to play in loose games and see poker as a search for equity as opposed to playing nitty.

Jim Brier - for the "quit being fancy and just play right every hand" attitude. I really went from breakeven to winning based on his posts.

Dynasty and Clark - no one pushed people to look for thin edges like these guys.

AndyFox - Who gave me a peek at how a high limit player thinks as I was starting to play in mid lmit games.

Someone who posts here? James and BBB. You can learn when they disagree.

Wow, glad I live up to your high standards. I'd like to add that I manage to hit the "submit reply" button correctly over 90% of the time.

I'm having vague recollections of the burrito comment. Can't believe you remember it - I wish I could find it searching the archives.

Since DougL opened the floodgates, here are my poll responses:

1. which poster would you most like to meet in real life?

Not kissing up but you, probably. (Not sure why Id want to kiss up to you tbh). You're probably a funny SOB irl.

Runners up:
Boz - cause he's so cantankerous I'd like to see if that holds in real life as well or if hes a big softie
NIX - I have an affinity for him because our micros paths have been similar.
Shadow - is prob. the most fun to party with.

Already met Marchron or else he might make the list.

2. which mod would win in a barfight on neutral territory: MrWookie, OziBattler, or kerowo?

Ozi, mostly because he seems to have good practice getting drunk and threatening Javanut, so I'm thinking he has some experience doing this in real life.

3. which poster do you think is the best overall poker player? as in, if i said you have to pick one player to go and play in some unknown poker game, who would you stake in that game?

One of the pros, obviously. Deathdonkey? More current poster Id have to say Bison. Non pro, maybe Wookie.

4. which poster do you think has the highest IQ?

I'm guessing Aaron W. is one smart mother****er.
Runner up: Wookie

5. who is the funniest poster?

You have the funniest responses in line and Marchron posts the funniest TRs so on the balance you.

Runners up: Snitch gets extra credit for his debate with himself the other day, and Buzz for telling Kerowo to eat a dick.

6. if your ignore list had to have one and only one poster on it, who would it be?

Fret who I think has good but controversial ideas that he then gets all agitated about when people dont buy into them wholesale. Note that I have not blocked Fret or anyone else for that matter.

Runner up: DougL because his posts are long but theyre good so I have to read the whole damn thing.

7. which poster do you think makes the most money (at life, not just at poker)?

Potentially me, don't think it's too high a bar though. Definitely not a poker though. Who knows, though, there's probably someone here who's like a millionaire.

8. which poster would you least like to bring home to meet your family?

Uh tough question. Most posters here probably not too good in the social skills department.

Least like to bring home - QueBob might make a hell of an impression.

Most - BBB seems to have the best demeanor - he's kind to noobs and probably pets and small children as well.

9. which poster do you think is probably the worst driver?

I probably wouldn't get in a car with Zeldark.

10. from which poster have you learned the most?

Probably Wookie due to willingness to respond to super grunches and really walk people through thinking and analyses.

i am well-pleased that you posted this from your gimmick account.

i think people worry too much about rake in most situations. yes, live rake is expensive, but the loose calls you get from hopeless hands more than make up for this. every couple months, someone makes a post in b&m about how live 2/4 is unbeatable because of the rake. they do these calculations where so much money is being raked off the table every hour and people don't rebuy at that rate and so on. most of those analyses seem spurious to me.

it's anecdotal and a relatively small sample size, but i have hundreds and hundreds of hours of 2/4 play with a positive winrate and i know how bad those players are. plus, if i am only skilled/rolled/sober enough for 2/4 it's not like i have a choice, so i mostly don't worry about it.

generally, i think an abc tag game is what gets the cheddar at a normal, loose, low-limit live table. as always, you adjust to the conditions at hand, but that 20/12 style or whatever seems about right on the whole.

Quote:
2. what is a good 3! range vs a decent lag open raise (SH game, in position)
it depends on who is left to act behind me and if anyone is trapped and how laggy villain is, but generally i'm 3!ing everything i play in this situation. something like 55+, A8+, A7s+, KTs+, KJ+, QJs-T9s.

Quote:
3. what is a good cap range vs a decent lag 3-bet (SH, in position (TAG original raiser), OOP (HU))
if it's shorthanded and there have already been two raises in front of me, the tag opened from utg or so and probably realized he had a lag behind him. i'm playing pretty honest in this spot. maybe 99+, AQ+, AJs+, KQs. i don't mind coldcalling in this spot with some of those hands (and a few others) to see if utg caps and to take advantage of my absolute position postflop.

Quote:
4. how often do you deviate from these ranges?
i've thrown out a few factors that influence my decisions. i'm not sure i can quantify how often those factors come up. i do play really boring poker most of the time.

Quote:
5. blue chimay vs red chimay?
i'm not sure i've tasted both varieties but all the chimay i've tried is too beer-y for me.

i have some friends who have huge hard-ons for belgian beer. one of them ordered some 5-year aged bottle of chimay at this beer bar in brussels. he said it was in the top 3 alcoholic beverages he had ever consumed.

Quote:
6. review Xylocain
cute avatar. catchy name. sense of humor doesn't always carry over; sometimes looks like trolling. europeanness is prevalent without being dominating. hasn't posted much strat lately and should probably get back to it.

Quote:
7. [censored] or ****
i prefer the second form as it is usually shorter, much easier to write, and gives clues to the unbowdlerized word due to its length.

Quote:
8. Who snitched on my "wtf is this ****?" post yesterday?
i think kerowo found it on his own and was a bit overzealous with his relatively new modstick.

Quote:
9. Do you think its a good thing most hand posts deal with pots that are 10BB+?
i'm not convinced that they are, but no. seeing a lot of different kinds of hand posts (small, medium, and big pots among other differences) would be best for the community. also, it's harder to make mistakes in big pots. for most players, their mistakes will be of larger consequence in smaller pots.

Quote:
10. do you **** **** ****** **** *********?
not as a rule, but anything is possible with the right combination of chemistry and biology.

Quote:
11. HU tourney small stakes, opponent says his computer is about to restart/crash and disconnects in the middle of next hand, do you sit out for him to return?
not unless he's a friend of mine or has otherwise demonstrated that he would do the same for me.

CR, I'm not the best poker player currently posting in micros. I'm good, but I'm guessing there are a dozen micros posters who are better than me.

This is not me being modest.

1) Why don't you play in SHENANIGANS?
i've played two sessions of poker in the last couple months. both of them were live. i promise it's nothing personal. as someone who was arranging a couple horseaments a week, i really like the idea of a regular social game, especially when it includes dabbling in non-holdem games.

Quote:
2) If you could only play one. Forever. Poker or Chess? Why?
it's tough because i hate them both right now -- too much losing!

i would pick chess because there is a lot more to study and think about and understand in chess than there is in poker, especially over the course of tens of years.

3) How nearly does your e-persona mirror your real life one? What are the differences.
i feel like other people might be more qualified to answer this one. does someone who has met me irl want to chime in?

i know from experience that people often interpret my written words as mean-spirited. i'm not, really, and i don't intend to come across that way (...usually). i am dry, sarcastic, even acerbic, but not really mean.

i think that these qualities are tempered in the real world by voice inflection, wild gesturing, and my goofy appearance. if you have hung out with me in public, you know that i don't take myself very seriously. when you see this, i think it becomes easier to understand where i'm coming from and i don't seem like such an ass-hole after all.

if you put it all together, i think my e-persona is a very fair representation of what i'm like.

Quote:
4) What is your educational background?
i have a BA in cognitive science from UC Berkeley.

5) Why are conducting your poll?
for fun, to add something slightly novel to my well, and because i like exploring the meta aspect of communities. we talk a lot about poker and some about our personal lives, but there is little discussion about how we interact with one another on this message board and the culture we've created for ourselves here.

Quote:
6) Are you a better poker player than Boz?
boz and i have different strengths and weaknesses. i have picked on some specific tactical deficiencies i've seen in his play, but i think he does better at some of the big picture stuff ("fold this hand and move on"). if we played 100 huhu games, i think we would split them pretty evenly.

Quote:
Thanks for what I have learned from you so far.
i get a little tingle inside when i see you 3! with some retarded hand that you would have folded for 1 bet six months ago. you're still a nit though .

i think the de facto community standards are fine (thanks for your work in setting those up, btw.) i mean, we could put it in xml and write a dtd but before i did any of that i would ask that critical first question which every good designer asks when faced with a strange query:

what are you trying to do?

i've never played seriously higher than 1/2 6m and a little 2/4 fr. if you can really play a solid abc game at those levels you should be fine. the problem is what "abc" really means. does it include steal/defense? does it include the adjustments you make against a lag?

2. If you find yourself at a table with 2 or 3 LAGs, do you just pack up and leave? And what if you're playing 6m, where all tables seem to have 2 or 3 LAGs?
as long as i am rolled for the game i am very happy to sit at this table.

probably. suggestions on theme?

4. Do you recall what the worst poker advice you got was that you ever actually followed for a while and then had to unlearn?
i would guess that the philosophy of "don't fold a reasonable hand on the end for 1 bet" has caused me to pay off way more than my fair share of passive players. it isn't that this is a concept that one should necessarily "unlearn", but since it reinforces my natural tendencies to want to "see what they have", i tend to overapply it.

5. What was the first poker book you read?
_hoyle's rules of games_. but that's probably not what you meant.

_super system_. i remember that first night at bay101 where running good intersected with doyle's advice about being aggressive and i made a "big" score and got really hooked on this whole poker thing.

6. I saw a guy with brown hair and a clipped beard reading a map on Sunday in the Mount Baker district outside a cafe near Seward Park. Was that you?
nope.

7. What's the best thing that you cook yourself?
either beef-and-bean burritos or cheesy garlic bread.

8. Do you credit any particular 2p2 posters for having great influence over your game?
i have probably learned the most from milesdyson. thinking about how board texture affects tactical considerations in limped pots, when to donk and when not to donk, and how to publish your dick on the internet without getting yelled at.

Well I'm about the 50th best poker player in the micros so it's a bit like guessing which redwood is the tallest. You probably have a better vantage than I do.

Tyler's racist burritos - mmmmm good!

90s and 80s plz. Although I'd settle even for "this is what's on my iPod 25 most played list" or some variety thereof.

Funny, I immediately thought of miles with the first of these two statements.

um, so far i like mattes's enthusiasm. i can't really think of other names off the top of my head.

instead i'll say that for me the biggest thing is people who demonstrate some effort. all that's required for me to not hate you immediately is clear demonstration that you've read the faq. that means a converted, lhe hand with a sentence that contains the word "reads" and no results at the end. bonus points for stopping the action at the decision you have a question about, making a reference to a relevant concept from the archives or digest or library, and double bonus points if you get qualified posters to disagree about some aspect of your play.

Which sophomore vets (~1,000-2,000 posts; i.e. Xylo, CrMenace, NIX...) do you think are wise beyond their years?
one of the things about this forum is that it weeds out most of the bad posters. they get tired of always being shouted down or ignored, so they leave. most people don't make it to 1k unless they're really interested in learning (and teaching) about the game.

as i've already indicated i'm bad at coming up with specific names. you and xylo and cr pass the grammar/spelling/agree with me criteria and all of you are strong, productive members of the community. a cursory look at the front page shows johnnytt as another good up-and-comer.

Quote:
Which more senior vets is high postcount not reflective of ability?
mine. i've almost certainly played the least hands of anyone else here with 5k+ posts.

Quote:
What limit do you play?
i'm currently live busto, but once i have an income again i'll start building my way up from 4/8 (the smallest game available here).

when i play online i've been hanging around .5/1-1/2 6m, but more often i play $5 horseaments or .25/.50-1/2 horse cash.

Quote:
How often do you play?
right now, none. i used to play 1-5 sessions per week, usually lasting 2-4 hours each.

Quote:
How much have you won?

What winrate is that?
i realize i'm going to need to put some graphs together. i estimate that i've earned a few thousand dollars winning about .75bb/hr over the last 3.5 years.

Favorite life accomplishment?
converting myself from a boring dork to a an adventurous soul. i am proud of the ways i have expanded my comfort zone in terms of foods that i eat, people i talk to, and places i've visited and lived in.

Quote:
If you had to start all over again with playing poker today, what would you play and how would you go about it, learning/BR building/moving up/etc?
my biggest regret is that i learned to play in b&ms and never really got comfortable or excited about playing online. this factor definitely stunted (and continues to stunt) my growth as a poker player.

i would start with and learn to play NL, since i think that is where the money and soft games will be for the next few years at least.

i am much more a cautious investor than a wild gambooler, so encouraging myself to take more shots at higher games would be a good habit.

i would concentrate more on bankroll subsidies like bonuses and rakeback.

i would be less worried about being wrong and take my beatings by posting as much strat as i could in as many forums as i could (shorthanded, full ring; micro, small, medium).

I remember the pics you had from climbing a mountain of some sort. Do you do a lot of climbing/hiking?
yes, i love to play outside. i did a lot of hiking around vegas this past spring and summer. i don't do any real "mountain climbing" with ropes and harnesses and "belay on!", but i do like to find little spots to boulder and mess around in the context of a hike.

I know that you play and might teach chess, but that's it. What is the deal with you and chess? This is coming from someone who used to have a long history with the game.
a cousin taught me to play when i was about 7. i played as a kid and was in the chess club in middle school, but never had many opportunities to play after that.

the chess teaching job was a lucky strike on craigslist. it was an opportunity to work with kids, and it was playing a game, so it worked out. i've been studying and playing online (i learned from my poker mistakes in this regard!) quite a bit in the last 3 years. my playing strength is about 1500 in slow games and about 1100 in blitz. i could increase my blitz strength with more practice, but i suck at it and don't play much fast chess.

Am I a good poster?
i covered this already, but yes. keep it up!

Quote:
Does the fact that I missed my 2k post affect the answer to the previous question?
no. dirty secret #1: i've still never made a milestone post of any consequence.
