Coins & currency, but not in any traditional sense. I collect coins from places I go as I go there, as souvenirs. Don't care what they're worth. Also low denomination paper currency, and higher denomination if it's got something interesting on it, especially a sweet animal or a sailboat. The Bermuda $2 bill has a pretty nice bluebird on it:
and the Maldives 20 rufiyaa note has not only a yellowfin tuna, but a sailboat as well:
started realizing I might have a problem when I spent 3 days trying to get a 40 franc special issue note from the Djibouti Federal Reserve, but can anyone really blame me when it has this sweet of a whale shark on it:
?
Eventually I'll make it to Tokelau (first 100% solar powered nation in the world!) and pick a couple of these dragonfly coins:
mostly as a gift for my cousin who loves all things dragonfly, but I'll hold on to one for myself.
The whale shark and the dragonfly are both special issues, and I normally just stick to regular in circulation stuff, but extenuating circumstances for both imo. If I happen to find someone selling old de-circulated coins somewhere, I'll often pick up one of each type as well, but I don't go searching out coin stores since I usually only care about stuff in circulation. Did manage to lucksack my way into one of these sweet pangolin coins from Zimbabwe:
which were only circulated from 2001-2003.
I will admit to making a special trip (OK, two) to the Namibian Federal Reserve in Windhoek to pick up a bunch of these:
because really, can anyone disagree with eating more fish?
