good point, this completely escaped me for some reason.

1) The only good point being made about the $.50 tip is that people don't want to carry around change, which is something I'd never really thought of b/c I like having a big jar of quarters at home. Saying it's 14.3% or whatever, is lol. A dollar a drink is the going rate for non-cheapskates, sorry, I didn't make this rule up. This may annoy you when you get a beer, but it also holds for complicated mixed drinks or whatever. I guarantee you if you're flipping quarters at your neighborhood bartender, you're not the first, second, or even next-to-last guy being served.

Also, the "I can do that so why tip" argument is stupid. You can presumably also carry your bags, drive a car, clean a hotel room, etc. You don't base tips on whether you can do something or not, you base them on what societal conventions dictate is the appropriate amount. Right now it's a dollar a drink at a bar. I, however, wholeheartedly approve of the guy that said he thinks tipping bartenders is stupid so he doesn't drink in restaurants.

2) I'm aware that people who pinch pennies wind up with more money. I also think their overall quality of life is pretty crap.

3) Yes, chips and salsa should be free, I agree.

4) At the fluff and fold where I live, they just kind of eyeball it, they don't do it by the lb. It's usually around 20 bucks, which I guess is on the way cheap side. Fwiw, I wouldn't spend 50 bucks on F and F.
1) meh, obviously $1/drink is standard, but there is a pretty obvious reason why it's acceptable to deviate from the norm. Now tell me, why is the onus on the person giving you money to give an extra 50% and not on you to accept 50% less? yah yah he could leave the $1 and take the quarters but lol who is gonna do that.

last i checked, i don't really give a **** what societal conventions dictate because since it's my money im gonna do whatever i ****ing deem is appropriate. god these threads piss me off so much and make me wanna avoid tipping altogether.

2) meh, depends on what level you take this, you can certainly pinch a few pennies in a lot of spots that will have no effect on the quality of your life just by not being a tard with your money.

4) so did you actually ever wash your laundry there by hand or are you just pulling #s out of your ass? Also how the **** couldn't you spend $50 on fluff and fold you cheap bastard! man wtf. cutting corners. now i think you are stupid for doing your laundry to save that little extra bit. see how a different perspective can change things a bit? not everyone is in the same financial position and can take the same liberties. for you, you can't afford $50, for them, they can't afford $20. so who's cheap now?

As for societal conventions, what's wrong w/ that? I mean, it's a societal convention that 15-20% is a good tip on dinner service. It's a convention that you tip like 5 bucks on a haircut. And you tip a dollar per drink. I'm sorry if cheap people don't like it, but there it is, and it's probably good that you're finding out now that every bartender in the world thinks you're a cheapskate loser when you leave silver.

If you're arguing whether it should be a dollar a drink, that's a different story.
anyways you're looking at this from way to narrow a perspective as there are obviously various reasons why someone might tip a certain amount.

Please explain to me, that if I feel that it SHOULDN'T be $1/drink why I should tip $1/drink. Why?

This culminated in me working at a top 20 restaurant in the US per Saveur, and though we all would make a joke here and there about different customers which can be expected in any business, after the shift we would all realize how great we had it and appreciate how many more people had it worse than us. Not saying it was an easy job, because it isn't for everyone, but being inside that niche, we knew we were lucky to have a job that came naturally to us make us so much money so easily.

My point is I disagree with just about everything OP has written. Get better at your job, get a better job, or stfu for the sake of everyone else that still works in the business. Maybe you just suck at it and people don't like you, I don't know. But you are most definitely looking at things the wrong way.

cliff notes: OP sucks.

Lots of opinions out there.

Some of this. If you call me cheap behind m back, do you really think I give a ****? Id tip well for SERVICE, if a bartender takes the time to actually talk to me and not just shove a beer at me, he or she will get a great tip.

Henry, I usually agree with you on most this but not the "rule" of tipping $1.50 on a beer to not carry change. I realize its different for us because we have a coin instead of a bill. I usually just open a tab, most places are more than happy when the see a black CC.

No, avatar is Bob Odenkirk from Mr. Show. It seems to annoy people like you, so I keep it. And I'm a baller? You spend my entire salary on drinks and tips. You, sir, are clearly the cs baller.

I dunno. For better service and to not look like a cheapskate in front of the bartender, other people, your date, etc? I mean, if you feel you SHOULDN'T tip at all for dinner, then don't. No one's holding a gun to your head.

This.

I hate how people think it should be customary for 20% tip for any kind of food/beverage service. Going to a restaurant and getting complimentary chips/salsa, then ordering an appetizer, then a meal, and getting a couple re-fills during the meal = 20% (+ or -) type tip.

Ordering a longneck and having the waitor hand it to you without spilling it or breaking it or calling you a racial epithet does not warrant 20%. It warrants leaving whatever sh*tty ass change they give me back because of their stupid pricing of $3.25 a beer or whatever. I hate change and I'm not leaving a dollar bill on top of a 300% marked-up beer* that you had to carry to me.

Most of your posts were fine though. Except yearh, your friend sounds pretty silly. Spending $35 to sleep with roaches off the strand instead of $50 is splitting hairs where hairs shouldn't be split. I probably would have covered the extra like you did, hoping he'd see how silly it was and give you back the $15.

Hah! Oh wow. It was already stated that he doesn't care, since it's HIS money. Plus what do I care if I look like a cheapstake in front of you or any other bartender? Especially if I'm with my gf why would SPENDING MORE ON YOU impress her? Why don't I buy her something or take her someplace nice? How would giving money to a rude bartender impress her? Keep going through life caring what other people think, I'm sure it will take you far.

Even with a tab I'm going to tip 30% and then round off to the nearest round number so we are not far from the $1.50.

The one I find worst of all was the friend who was willing to stay at Imperial Palace over $30. I would have cancelled the trip.

Most certainly.

I was going to recommend schonwalder.org to you, seeing as that site set me on my way to getting to where I did (site made by a European who started in the restaurant business folding 3,000 napkins a day just so he could get a job at a nice place and work his way up), but now I notice that they charge for most things on that site that I found for free however many years ago that set me on my path to being better at my job.

But hey, since you aren't a cheapskate, I'm sure you will pay it so you can make more money in the long run.

Good luck.

If you were a great bartender you wouldn't be working in a ****ty mexican restaurant.

I've really had restraint on this topic in the past, but I've had a few drinks today, and for the good of every worthy restaurant worker, if you want to keep at it in this thread, I will be happy to tear you apart.

I'll always leave $1.50 in this situation, but I really do dislike it when a bar charges a non-whole dollar amount since you're pretty much charging me an extra dollar since I'm going to levae the change in addittion to my normal tip. Pretty cheap tactic imo for the bars to make themselves and their employees more money.

Yeah okay, I was in vegas with people from this forum, not to mention the people from student life who have seen my gf before. I treat the waitstaff amazingly well, btw, like I said earlier about tipping your salary. As already mentioned in this thread, I tip the service. Also think about what your saying. If the women you are with are paying more attention to how much you are tipping rather than you as a person then you also fail at women. I've not met a single woman who would prefer being money tipped away than spent on them. Just think about it for a second.

Anyone else think OP is a 25 year-old who just recently moved out of his parent's home?

I'm not incredibly ambitious, one, and two, it's not a ****ty mexican place. It's kind of upscale-ish, although certainly not the most expensive restaurant in town. I am good at the job, and super-gracious to the guests, cheap or not.

Sorry Anacardo, we get too many of these tip threads, that I couldn't hold back anymore when the op started spouting of about his false sense of entitlement for people's money for minimum service, and how society dictates how we should spend our money.

If it was good enough, you wouldn't even had considered making this thread.

And yes, when I did this job, I was better at it than you and worked in a much nicer place than you currently do. What exactly are you saying? That you are a lazy piece of **** lacking motivation, who still feels the need to call people cheap and expect them to pay you well?

Seriously?
