Re: Wtf Cheap People

The problem with judging people as being cheap or whatever, is your failure to realize that you are little more than a stupid chimp to them. You don't matter, and whatever ethereal noise is bouncing around in your braincase doesn't matter either. Especially if you're a serving wench. Peasant.

Edit: Just read your comment about societal conventions. You are a ****ing tool. Enjoy your tips. I tip for the service, not the item. If you were an interesting person and we struck up a conversation, I'd give you $20 as a tip. However if you just serve me my drink and that's that, your lucky to get those 2 quarters.
Thanks, I do enjoy my tips since most of them come from adults who know how to behave and not 22 year-old poker shutins that go to penny draft night once a month.

As for societal conventions, what's wrong w/ that? I mean, it's a societal convention that 15-20% is a good tip on dinner service. It's a convention that you tip like 5 bucks on a haircut. And you tip a dollar per drink. I'm sorry if cheap people don't like it, but there it is, and it's probably good that you're finding out now that every bartender in the world thinks you're a cheapskate loser when you leave silver.

If you're arguing whether it should be a dollar a drink, that's a different story.

Re: Wtf Cheap People

Why is it that a lot of people who work in the serving business are a bunch money-obsessed dickbags? Seriously, most people don't think about tipping 1/10th as much as the people I've met who are servers. All I ever hear is bitching about how some old person stiffed you or bragging about some huge ass tip you got. Nobody cares.

Also, maybe you should realize that "societal conventions" are different even from region to region. It is certainly not $5 for a haircut here, so maybe the people who tip you with the change only tip $.50 where they are from.

Sorry, I don't think eating, drinking and doing what you want when you feel like it are useless things. I think having 3 million dollars you don't know what to do with b/c you've spent your entire life walking around w/ a clenched rectum and a change purse full of pinched pennies is pretty useless, though.

Saying society prescribes x is a load of horse ****. If I tip someone, I tip them what I think they should get, not what every other person hands them just "because" that's the way it is.

Yeah, I'm a 22 year-old poker shut in who has no idea how true adults behave. This coming from a person who's life ambition is to be a server who complains about how cheap people are? Let me guess, your art history degree isn't opening all the doors you thought it would? I'll stick to what I've been doing, but what do I know I'm just a 22 year old cs ph.d student/poker player who most likely makes more than triple what you do in a year playing part time. And I guarantee you I spend at least your salary on drinks/tips when I go out.

Very good point. I didn't force you to become a waiter, if you don't like the tips find a new job.

Thank you. I agree completely.

P.S. You fail for fluff-and-fold. I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming where you live you can't have a washing machine/dryer, but you're unnecessarily spending almost double weekly. Some families need that extra $8 to live on, so **** you, you condescending douche.

Everyone in this country is a money-obsessed dickbag. It's just, most people get paid salaries and aren't in the position of thinking about exactly how much money every transaction at their job gained or cost them. And really--People who aren't servers don't think about tipping as much as servers? Imagine that. I wonder if people who sell auto parts think about selling auto parts more than most people.

Tipping a rude, condescending bartender (you) .50 instead of a dollar because of his ****ty attitude and service is certainly worth it to me and it has nothing to do with saving 50 cents. If that makes me a clenched rectum, penny pincher, so be it.

1) Not everyone is a money-obsessed dickbag. Don't try and give me some bull**** like that. It doesn't make your argument see deep or worldy, it makes you seem like an idiot because you're pretending to look past my point.

2) Again, with the servers and tips thing. You know what I mean, and you're being purposely ignorant about my point. You getting all in a huff about people being "cheap" is proof enough that you're thinking about the whole tipping thing WAY too much. You're getting $4 for a $3.50 beer because the guy doesn't want to carry change. It's not some big conspiracy or something. It's pretty easy to figure out if you took half a second.

I'm from the UK and there is NO WAY I'd tip in a bar/club whatever unless it was say 14.20 or something random. We pay say 2.50 for a bottle of Becks at a bar, wouldn't cross my mind to leave a tip. I've been a bartender before and people do leave tips but no way is it standard especially on a single beer.
You're not the only one. I go to Portugal every year and my uncle owns a bar. No one tips and he doesn't think twice about it (I asked him what the standard was).

The correct tip on a $3.50 beer is $1.50 if you don't want to carry change.

Seriously, gtfo.

Last edited by RobAtticus; 06-22-2008 at 07:17 PM. Reason: 'Change' is a pretty common term for money of the coin variety.

Re: Wtf Cheap People

Like I've said too many times in too many different restaurant/bar/stupid ass tipping threads already, I spent close to a decade in the business.

I LOVED my job. That is because once I realized how easy the money was (and how much tang is around for the taking, being in my early 20's), I began to take my job pretty seriously, and I only concentrated on how to get myself into a better position to make more money by getting myself into better and better restaurants by being the best I could be at my job.

This culminated in me working at a top 20 restaurant in the US per Saveur, and though we all would make a joke here and there about different customers which can be expected in any business, after the shift we would all realize how great we had it and appreciate how many more people had it worse than us. Not saying it was an easy job, because it isn't for everyone, but being inside that niche, we knew we were lucky to have a job that came naturally to us make us so much money so easily.

My point is I disagree with just about everything OP has written. Get better at your job, get a better job, or stfu for the sake of everyone else that still works in the business. Maybe you just suck at it and people don't like you, I don't know. But you are most definitely looking at things the wrong way.

cliff notes: OP sucks.

Who says I have a s***ty attitude? I'm actually a really good bartender/server and have a ton of regulars who come in when I'm working. And yes, you are a clenched-rectum penny-pincher.

Or hey, $.50. Either way works. Some people don't like paying 140% for an already overpriced beer. It doesn't make them a penny pincher, it makes them reasonable.
